How to use this square yards calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator finds the area of a rectangular surface from its length and width, expresses that area in square yards, and optionally estimates a material cost. It is useful for flooring, carpet, turf, landscaping fabric, paving, and other products priced by area. It assumes a rectangle; irregular spaces should be divided into rectangles and calculated separately. The result is a planning estimate, not an allowance for waste, seams, pattern matching, site conditions, or supplier minimums.
When to use it
Use it when comparing a room measured in feet with carpet sold by the square yard, estimating turf for a rectangular lawn, converting a patio plan from meters to square yards, or checking the budget impact of a quoted price per square yard. Input guide
Length is required and accepts a positive decimal number using a period as the decimal separator, such as 30 or 12.5. Choose feet, yards, meters, or inches. A larger length increases area in direct proportion. Do not enter unit letters in the number field or use a decimal comma. Width follows the same rules and may use a different unit from Length. A zero or negative dimension is rejected because it cannot define a positive rectangular area. Cost per square yard is optional, accepts a nonnegative U.S.-dollar amount such as 4.00, and multiplies directly by the square-yard result. A common mistake is entering a price quoted per square foot; convert that quote to a per-square-yard price first by multiplying by nine.
Output guide
Yardage is the exact rectangular area converted to square yards and rounded to two decimals for display. Estimated price is yardage multiplied by the entered price, shown in U.S. dollars; zero means either a zero price or no cost entered. Square feet and Square meters are equivalent area identities, not separate estimates. Acres is useful for larger sites and follows the recognized relationship of 4,840 square yards per acre; the NIST area conversion factors provide supporting context. The summary pills repeat the three most commonly needed values, while the conversion table shows the same canonical area at greater precision.
Worked example
For the startup example, 30 feet × 20 feet = 600 square feet. Because one square yard equals 9 square feet, 600 ÷ 9 = 66.6667 square yards, displayed as 66.67 yd². At $4.00 per square yard, 66.6667 × $4.00 = $266.6668, displayed as $266.67. The equivalent metric area is 55.7418 m² and the acreage is 66.6667 ÷ 4,840 = 0.013774 acres.
Formula and planning notes
Area = converted length × converted width
Square yards = area in square feet ÷ 9
Estimated price = square yards × cost per square yard
For rectangular projects, multiplying length by width is exact when both measurements describe perpendicular sides in consistent units. The University of Minnesota Extension uses the same length-times-width principle when calculating treated area in field applications; see its area calculation guidance. For purchasing, measure the usable surface rather than the surrounding boundary, then add a project-specific waste factor separately. Carpet seams, tile cuts, roll widths, sod pallet sizes, and irregular edges can all make the ordered quantity larger than the geometric area.
For an L-shaped room or yard, split the plan into non-overlapping rectangles, calculate each part, and add the square-yard results. Avoid measuring the full bounding rectangle unless the material truly covers that whole space. For very large parcels, acres may be easier to communicate: one acre equals 43,560 square feet or 4,840 square yards. The USDA conversion tables also describe rectangular field area as length multiplied by width before converting to acres.
