How to use the square meter calculator

What this calculator does. This tool finds the two-dimensional area of a square, rectangle, circle, triangle, regular pentagon, regular hexagon, or regular octagon. It can also convert a known area into square meters and other common units. Area describes surface coverage, so it is useful for estimating floors, walls, lawns, paving, fabric, paint coverage, and material orders. It does not account for openings, waste, irregular edges, slope, thickness, or the extra material a contractor may recommend.

When to use it. Use the calculator when measuring a rectangular room for flooring, checking the size of a circular patio, estimating a triangular garden bed, comparing property areas reported in different units, or converting an already known square-foot figure into square meters. NIST explains that the SI unit of area is the square meter, written m².

How to calculate. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: a 3 m by 5 m rectangle, producing exactly 15 m². The example workbook is available immediately. To calculate your own area:

  1. Select the required Shape.
  2. Replace the demonstration measurements in Side A and Side B, or enter a Known area in Custom area mode. Choose the unit beside each value; mixed units are allowed.
  3. Select the Result unit. The primary result, conversion cards, calculation table, and downloadable workbook update from the same calculation model.
  4. Choose Download Excel to create a validated .xlsx workbook from the current values. Choose Reset to clear the demonstration and calculated content. After Reset, the download is unavailable until a complete valid set of measurements is entered again.

Input guide. Shape is required and determines which formula and dimensions are used. For Square, Regular pentagon, Regular hexagon, and Regular octagon, Side A is the positive side length. For Circle, it becomes Radius. For Rectangle, Side A and Side B are positive length and width values. For Triangle, they are positive base and perpendicular height values. Each length accepts ordinary decimal notation such as 3, 2.5, or 0.75; commas, scientific notation, and unit text inside the number box are rejected to prevent ambiguous interpretation. The adjacent unit selector accepts millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, or yards. A larger required dimension increases the result; zero and negative lengths are invalid.

In Custom area mode, Known area is required and accepts a positive decimal in the selected square unit, including m², ft², yd², acres, and hectares. Use this mode for a figure already calculated elsewhere. Result unit is always required, but it only changes presentation: the canonical area remains in square meters. A common mistake is treating a linear conversion factor as an area factor. Because area is squared, 1 ft² equals 0.09290304 m², not 0.3048 m². NIST's unit-conversion guidance and tables provide authoritative conversion references.

Output guide. Area is the primary calculated or converted surface area in the selected result unit. It is an exact mathematical identity for the entered dimensions, subject only to display rounding and measurement accuracy. Square feet, Square yards, Hectares, and Acres are parallel conversions of the same canonical area. A zero result is not shown because required measurements must be positive. Very small hectare or acre values are normal for rooms. The summary pills repeat the selected shape, entered dimensions, and square-meter area. The Calculation details table shows each entered value, its meter-based canonical value, and its role in the formula.

Worked example. The startup rectangle uses Side A = 3 m and Side B = 5 m. The rectangle formula is:

Area = length × width = 3 m × 5 m = 15 m²

The same 15 m² converts to 161.4587 ft², 17.9399 yd², 0.0015 ha, and approximately 0.003707 acre. Those values appear in the first-open result cards and workbook. When recording measurements, keep the number and unit together; NIST's SI writing guidance recommends a space between the numerical value and unit symbol.

Formulas and planning notes

The calculator converts all entered lengths to meters before applying a formula. A square uses s²; a rectangle uses a × b; a circle uses πr²; a triangle uses bh ÷ 2; a regular pentagon uses (1/4)√(5(5 + 2√5))s²; a regular hexagon uses (3√3/2)s²; and a regular octagon uses 2(1 + √2)s². For purchasing materials, calculate the net area first, subtract confirmed openings where appropriate, and then apply a separate waste allowance suited to the material, pattern, cutting method, and installer guidance.
