How to use this spindle spacing calculator
What this calculator does. It estimates how many equal-width spindles fit between two posts while keeping the clear opening at or below a maximum you choose. It also gives a practical centerline schedule for marking the rail. The result is a layout calculation, not a structural design, permit approval, or substitute for local building-code review.
When to use it. Use it while laying out deck guards, stair balustrades mounted on a shoe rail, porch rails, decorative screens, or similar repeated vertical members. It is especially helpful when you need balanced end gaps, want to compare a uniform-gap layout with a centered maximum-gap layout, or need a printable position schedule for installation.
How to calculate. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: a 75-inch opening, 1.5-inch spindles, and a 4-inch maximum clear gap. The example workbook is immediately available.
- Select Unit system. Inches and centimeters are supported, and switching units converts the current values rather than merely changing labels.
- Select Layout method. “Even spacing throughout” makes every clear gap, including both end gaps, equal. “Maximum gap, centered ends” uses the selected maximum between interior spindles and balances the leftover space at the two ends.
- Enter the Inside railing distance, measured between the inside faces of the supporting posts or walls.
- Enter the Spindle width measured along the same horizontal layout line. For a shaped baluster, use the governing width at the point where spacing is checked.
- Enter the Maximum allowable spacing. This must be a positive clear-opening limit appropriate to your jurisdiction and project.
- Read the count, clear gap, center-to-center spacing, end spacing, and the position table. Then choose Download Excel to save the current validated model. Reset clears the demonstration values and results; Excel remains unavailable until a complete valid state is entered again.
Input guide. Inside railing distance is required, accepts a positive decimal such as 75 in or 190.5 cm, and controls the total available length. Spindle width is required, accepts a positive decimal such as 1.5 in, and must be smaller than the opening; a larger width generally reduces the number of members needed but also changes centerline spacing. Maximum allowable spacing is required, accepts a positive decimal such as 4 in, and sets the design ceiling for the clear opening. Do not enter mixed fractions such as “3 1/2”; enter 3.5. Commas are treated as thousands separators only in U.S. numeric format, so decimal-comma input such as “3,5” is rejected to prevent misinterpretation.
Output guide. Recommended spindle count is the whole number of members needed. Clear spindle spacing is the open distance between adjacent member faces. Center-to-center spacing adds one spindle width to the interior clear gap. End spacing is the clear distance from each post to the nearest spindle in an even layout; in centered mode it is the balanced leftover end gap. Maximum check reports whether the calculated largest opening is at or below your selected limit. Total spindle width, Total open space, and Number of clear spaces cross-check the layout. The position table lists the near edge, centerline, and far edge of every spindle from the left post.
Worked example. With a 75-inch opening, 1.5-inch spindles, and a 4-inch maximum gap, the minimum count is the ceiling of (75 – 4) ÷ (1.5 + 4), which is 13. The even-spacing rule then tests 13 members and produces (75 – 13 × 1.5) ÷ 14 = 3.964 inches, so 13 spindles satisfy the limit. The schedule places the first near edge 3.964 inches from the left post and advances by 5.464 inches from one near edge to the next.

How the spacing formulas work
For equal spacing throughout, the calculator finds the smallest whole spindle count that keeps every one of the count-plus-one clear spaces within the selected maximum. The governing formula is:
clear spacing = (inside distance – spindle count × spindle width) ÷ (spindle count + 1)
For the centered maximum-gap method, interior gaps stay at the selected maximum. The remaining distance is split equally into two end gaps. This method can be useful when a repeated interior gap matters more than making all openings identical. Always verify that the resulting end gaps also comply with the project limit.
Before installation, check the actual lumber or metal dimensions, post plumb, rail straightness, fastener clearances, and any required structural loading.
