How to use the paver sand calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the volume and bulk weight of bedding sand needed beneath a rectangular paver surface. It also adds an optional purchasing allowance and, when a unit price is supplied, estimates material cost. It is useful for patios, walkways, parking pads, and other rectangular interlocking-paver layouts. It does not design the structural base, verify drainage, select a sand gradation, or replace the installation specification for a particular paver system.
When to use it
Use it while comparing supplier quotes, checking whether bagged material will cover a small project, planning a bulk delivery, or estimating a budget before excavation. The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association describes bedding sand as a functional layer in interlocking pavement and notes a nominal 1-inch thickness in its construction guidance for interlocking concrete pavements.
How to calculate

Input guide
Width and Length are required positive decimal dimensions in feet or meters; examples are 8.5 ft and 19 ft. Larger values increase area, volume, weight, and cost proportionally. Do not enter feet-and-inches notation such as 8'6"; convert it to a decimal first. Sand depth is required and uses inches in U.S. customary mode or centimeters in metric mode; 1 in is a practical demonstration value. Enter the compacted design thickness, not the loose pile height. Bulk density is required in lb/ft³ or kg/m³; 100 lb/ft³ is the sample value, but supplier data should take priority because moisture, grading, and compaction affect bulk density.
Extra allowance is an optional percentage from 0% through 100%; 10% is shown. It raises only the purchase quantity and cost, not the geometric base volume. Avoid using it to hide uncertain dimensions – measure first, then add a reasoned margin. Price per weight is an optional nonnegative decimal in dollars per pound or dollars per kilogram; $0.06/lb is the sample. Enter zero when no price is known. The Unit system control converts all physical quantities, while currency remains U.S. dollars.
Output guide
Surface area is width multiplied by length. Base sand volume is area multiplied by depth before allowance. Purchase volume includes the selected allowance. Sand to purchase is purchase volume multiplied by bulk density and is the primary ordering estimate. Estimated cost multiplies purchase weight by the entered unit price; a zero result means price was entered as zero, not that the sand is free. The summary pills repeat area, depth, base volume, and base weight for quick checking. The breakdown table shows each formula and its current result, so unit or data-entry mistakes are easier to spot.
Worked example
For the opening example, area is 8.5 ft × 19 ft = 161.50 ft². A 1-inch layer equals 1/12 ft, so base volume is 161.50 × 1/12 = 13.4583 ft³. At 100 lb/ft³, base weight is 1,345.83 lb. Adding 10% gives 14.8042 ft³ and 1,480.42 lb to purchase. At $0.06 per pound, estimated cost is $88.83. The same values appear in the live cards, table, and downloadable workbook.

Formula, assumptions, and practical checks
The model uses four direct relationships: area = width × length; base volume = area × depth; base weight = base volume × bulk density; and purchase amount = base amount × (1 + allowance). Cost equals purchase weight multiplied by price per unit weight. The formulas are exact identities for the entered rectangular geometry and chosen density, but the physical result remains an estimate because job-site conditions vary.
Measure the actual sand-bearing footprint, not the outermost landscape edge when edging or borders occupy part of the rectangle. Keep all dimensions in one unit system. Confirm whether a supplier quotes loose, damp, dry, or compacted density, and verify whether bag coverage is stated by volume or by area at a specified depth. For installations with curves, cutouts, steps, or multiple rectangles, calculate each rectangular section separately and add the quantities.
