How to use this paver calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the rectangular area of a patio, walkway, or other paving project; the face area of one rectangular paver; the number of pavers required before and after a waste allowance; and optional material, installation, and combined costs. It is a quantity-planning tool, not a structural design specification. It does not size the aggregate base, bedding sand, drainage system, edge restraint, or paver thickness for site loads. For measurements and conversions, NIST explains that area is measured in square units, so every project dimension must use the same unit before multiplication.
When to use it
Use the estimate while comparing paver sizes, requesting supplier quotes, budgeting professional installation, or checking whether a pallet or partial pallet is likely to cover a rectangular section. For an irregular layout, divide the plan into rectangles, run each rectangle separately, and add the order quantities. Curves, diagonals, and intricate patterns usually need a larger waste allowance than a simple straight layout.
How to calculate
- The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: a 12 ft × 16 ft project, 4 in × 8 in pavers, 10% waste, $0.75 per paver, and $9.00/ft² installation. Its example Excel workbook is available immediately.
- Select Measurement system. Imperial uses feet for the project and inches for pavers; Metric uses meters and centimeters. Switching converts current dimensions rather than merely relabeling them.
- Replace Project width and Project length, then enter Paver width and Paver length. Results update live.
- Set Waste allowance, and optionally enter Price per paver and Installation cost per area. Read Pavers to order first, then review cost cards and the detail table.
- Select Download Excel to export the current validated model. Reset clears the demonstration and calculated data; Excel may remain disabled until a complete valid set is entered again.
Input guide
Measurement system is required and accepts Imperial or Metric. Project width and Project length are required positive decimals in feet or meters; examples are 12 and 16 ft. Larger dimensions increase area, count, and installation cost. Do not mix feet with inches or meters with centimeters in these fields. Paver width and Paver length are required positive decimals in inches or centimeters; 4 × 8 in is a common rectangular size. Smaller pavers increase the count needed for the same project area. Enter face dimensions, not package size or thickness.
Waste allowance is required from 0% to 100%; 10% is a practical estimating example for cuts, breakage, and spares, but the suitable rate depends on pattern and geometry. Price per paver is optional, nonnegative U.S. dollars per whole paver; enter 0 when unknown. Installation cost per area is optional and nonnegative in dollars per ft² or m². It can represent labor only or an installed-price quote, but use one interpretation consistently to avoid double counting.
Output guide and worked example
Project area is width × length. Paver area is the face area of one unit. Pavers per area unit divides one square foot or square meter by paver area. Base pavers is the unrounded exact coverage count. Pavers to order applies waste and rounds upward to a whole unit. Material cost multiplies the rounded order by price per paver. Installation cost multiplies project area by the installation rate. Total estimated cost adds those two cost components. A zero cost means the corresponding optional rate is zero, not that the project has no real-world expense.
How the estimate works
project area = width × length
paver density = one area unit ÷ paver face area
pavers to order = ceiling(base pavers × (1 + waste ÷ 100))
In Imperial mode, one square foot equals 144 square inches. In Metric mode, one square meter equals 10,000 square centimeters. NIST's unit-conversion guidance describes conversion as multiplication or division by an appropriate factor. This calculator uses exact international conversions when switching systems: 1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 in = 2.54 cm.
Planning beyond the paver count
A complete installation also needs a suitable foundation, bedding layer, joints, edge restraint, drainage, compaction, and site-specific detailing. The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association publishes industry resources on concrete masonry and hardscape systems. Supplier packaging, pallet quantities, color-lot availability, local soil conditions, freeze-thaw exposure, slopes, and intended traffic can all affect the final purchase and construction plan.
For curves or patterns, estimate each rectangular region, then raise the waste allowance to reflect cutting complexity. Keep a few matching spare pavers for future repairs because replacement colors can vary between manufacturing runs. Verify final quantities against the supplier's coverage data and round orders to the package or pallet increment actually sold.
