How to use the lumber calculator
What this calculator does. This tool estimates the physical volume, combined end-to-end length, board-foot equivalent, and purchase price for a batch of equal-size lumber pieces. It is useful for material takeoffs, preliminary budgeting, comparing package quantities, and checking whether a quoted order matches your dimensions. It does not select a structural grade, determine allowable loads, account for kerf and cutting waste, or replace a project-specific engineering or code review.
When to use it. Use it when planning a deck or fence order, pricing boards for furniture or shelving, checking stock for a framing or shop project, or converting a metric lumber order into the board-foot convention used in many North American lumber discussions.
How to calculate. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: 14 pieces measuring 2.4 m by 0.14 m by 0.03 m at $12.75 each. The example workbook is available immediately. To replace it:
- Choose Unit system. Metric uses meters; Imperial uses feet for length and inches for width and thickness. Changing the selection converts the current dimensions rather than merely relabeling them.
- Enter Length of one piece, Width of one piece, and Thickness of one piece as positive decimals. Use actual measured sizes, especially when nominal and dressed sizes differ.
- Enter How many lumber pieces? as a positive whole number. Add Price per piece in U.S. dollars when you want a total-cost estimate.
- Read the live result cards and the measurement table. Select Download Excel to export the current typed inputs and calculated outputs. Select Reset to clear the demonstration data; export is then disabled until a complete valid state is entered again.
Input guide. Unit system is required and accepts Metric or Imperial. Length of one piece is required; a realistic metric example is 2.4 m, while an imperial example is 8 ft. Width of one piece and Thickness of one piece are required positive decimals; examples are 0.14 m and 0.03 m, or about 5.5 in and 1.18 in. Higher values increase volume in direct proportion. A common mistake is mixing nominal trade labels with actual dimensions. How many lumber pieces? is required and must be an integer from 1 through 1,000,000; increasing it scales total volume, total length, board feet, and price. Price per piece is optional, accepts a nonnegative decimal such as 12.75, and only affects total price. Commas used as thousands separators are accepted in unambiguous U.S. number formats; decimal-comma forms such as 1,5 are rejected.
Output guide. Total volume is the combined three-dimensional volume of all pieces. Total length is the sum of piece lengths if laid end to end. Volume per piece is the exact product of the three entered dimensions. Board feet is a volume conversion, not a count of boards; the University of Minnesota Extension defines one board foot as 144 cubic inches in its timber measurement guidance. Total price multiplies quantity by price per piece and remains unavailable when no price is supplied. The summary pills repeat the most useful totals, and each row of the measurement table shows per-piece, all-piece, metric, and imperial values from the same model.
Worked example. For the startup values, one board has volume 2.4 × 0.14 × 0.03 = 0.01008 m³. Multiplying by 14 gives 0.14112 m³, displayed as 0.1411 m³. Combined length is 2.4 × 14 = 33.60 m. Converting 0.14112 m³ to cubic inches and dividing by 144 gives about 59.78 board feet. Price is 14 × $12.75 = $178.50. These same values appear in the first-open results and workbook.

Formula, assumptions, and practical limits
For each piece, volume equals length × width × thickness. Total volume multiplies that result by the piece count, while total length multiplies only the entered length by the piece count. Total price is quantity × price per piece. Imperial entries are converted to meters internally before calculations, which keeps one canonical model and prevents mixed-unit arithmetic. The board-foot result is calculated from canonical cubic volume using the exact identity 1 board foot = 144 cubic inches.
The estimate assumes every piece has identical rectangular dimensions. It does not include waste, defects, moisture movement, planing, end trimming, saw kerf, or a contingency allowance. Add those effects to your purchasing plan separately. The USDA notes that lumber is sold in many forms, species, and grades, so volume alone is not a substitute for matching the product to its intended use.
Pressure-treated wood requires additional handling and disposal care. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provides an overview of wood preservative chemicals; follow the product label and local rules rather than treating all wood as interchangeable.
