How to use the junction box sizing calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the minimum inside length and height of a pull or junction box where raceways carry insulated conductors sized 4 AWG or larger. It applies the familiar straight-pull rule of eight times the largest raceway trade size and the angle/U-pull rule of six times the largest raceway plus the trade sizes of the other raceways in the same row. It does not perform conductor box-fill calculations for small conductors, verify enclosure listings, select a NEMA rating, or replace a plan review by a qualified electrician or the authority having jurisdiction.
When to use it
Use it while laying out a commercial feeder pull box, checking a junction-box schedule before procurement, comparing several raceway arrangements, or reviewing whether a proposed enclosure has enough room for a 90-degree or U-shaped pull. The underlying dimensional rules are associated with NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code; always verify the adopted edition and local amendments.
How to calculate
- The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: a 2.5-inch horizontal straight pull, a left-side row of 4, 1.5, 1.5, and 1-inch raceways, and a bottom row of three 2-inch raceways. The displayed result and Excel workbook are ready immediately.
- Select the Largest conduit for horizontal straight pulls and Largest conduit for vertical straight pulls. Choose None when that direction has no straight pull.
- Enter angle or U-pull rows for the left, right, top, and bottom walls. Separate conduit trade sizes in one row with commas and separate multiple rows with semicolons.
- Read the minimum dimensions, governing summary, and sizing-check table. Use the largest check in each direction.
- Choose Download Excel to save the current inputs, calculations, and assumptions as a validated .xlsx workbook. Reset clears the demonstration and calculated state; Excel download remains disabled until a complete meaningful layout is entered again.
Input guide
Largest conduit for horizontal straight pulls is an optional trade-size selection from 1/2 to 6 inches. A 2.5-inch example produces a 20-inch length check because 8 × 2.5 = 20. Choosing a larger size increases only the minimum length. Do not enter the outside diameter of the conduit; use its nominal trade size. Largest conduit for vertical straight pulls works the same way but controls a height check.
Left-side angle/U-pull rows and Right-side angle/U-pull rows are optional text inputs that affect length. Top-side angle/U-pull rows and Bottom-side angle/U-pull rows affect height. Each row accepts 1 to 6 positive raceway trade sizes, and the calculator accepts up to 3 rows per wall. For example, 4, 1.5, 1.5, 1 means one row whose largest raceway is 4 inches and whose other raceways total 4 inches. The required dimension is 6 × 4 + 4 = 28 inches. Avoid decimal commas such as 1,5 for one-and-a-half inches because commas separate conduits; enter 1.5 instead.
Output guide
Minimum inside dimensions is the recommended length × height identity in inches. Minimum length is driven by horizontal straight pulls and angle/U-pull rows on the left or right walls. Minimum height is driven by vertical straight pulls and rows on the top or bottom walls. The summary pills repeat these live values, while Governing identifies the check that set the controlling dimension. A zero in one direction means no valid pull was entered for that direction, not that a zero-size enclosure is acceptable.
The Sizing checks table lists each active rule, its direction, largest raceway, total of the other raceways in the same row, and required dimension. The table is an auditable calculation breakdown rather than a separate recommendation. Higher values result from a larger controlling raceway, more raceways in the same row, or both.
Worked example
In the startup example, the horizontal straight pull requires 8 × 2.5 = 20 inches. The left-side angle row requires 6 × 4 + 1.5 + 1.5 + 1 = 28 inches, so 28 inches governs the length. The bottom row requires 6 × 2 + 2 + 2 = 16 inches, so 16 inches governs the height. The first-open result is therefore 28 × 16 inches, and the workbook records these same typed values and formulas.
Formula and design notes
For straight pulls, multiply the largest raceway trade size in the pull direction by eight. For angle and U-pulls, evaluate every row independently: multiply the largest raceway in that row by six, then add the trade sizes of all other raceways in the row. These rules address bending and pulling space, not all aspects of installation. Raceway fill is a different calculation, and boxes containing splices or devices may also require a volume check.
