How to use this gravel driveway calculator

What this calculator does. It estimates the geometric volume of a rectangular gravel driveway, adds an optional purchasing allowance, converts that purchase quantity into weight using a bulk-density assumption, and estimates material cost. It is useful for early budgeting, comparing supplier quotes, checking whether a truckload is likely to cover the project, and preparing a material takeoff before site work. It does not design the driveway structure, verify soil bearing capacity, size drainage, or replace local engineering and permitting requirements.

When to use it. Use it when planning a new residential driveway, refreshing an existing gravel surface, estimating an access lane, or comparing gravel options sold by volume versus weight. How to calculate. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: a 100 m long, 3 m wide driveway, 15 cm compacted depth, 10% extra allowance, 1.25 t/m³ density, and a $25 per m³ material price. The example workbook is immediately available.

  1. Select Measurement system. Switching between Metric and Imperial converts the current dimensions, density, and displayed volumes rather than merely relabeling them.
  2. Replace Length, Width, and Compacted depth with measured positive decimal values. Use a period as the decimal separator; scientific notation and ambiguous decimal-comma entries are rejected.
  3. Set Extra material allowance for trimming, minor grade variation, handling loss, and supplier rounding. Then enter the supplier's Bulk density and optional Material price.

Input guide. Length and Width are required positive decimals in meters or feet; 100 m and 3 m are realistic examples. Increasing either raises every quantity proportionally. Measure the actual gravel footprint rather than the property-line distance. Compacted depth is required in centimeters or inches; 15 cm is the example. It is the finished layer thickness, not necessarily the loose depth before rolling. Extra material allowance is optional, accepts 0 – 100%, and adds directly to the purchase volume; 10% is a common planning placeholder, not a universal rule. Bulk density is required for weight and uses metric tons per cubic meter or short tons per cubic yard; use the supplier's value because gradation and moisture affect it. Material price is optional, nonnegative, and interpreted per displayed purchase-volume unit; do not enter a per-ton price without first converting the pricing basis.

Output guide. Base volume is the exact rectangular geometry identity length × width × depth. Extra volume is the allowance portion; zero means no contingency was added. Purchase volume is base plus extra and is the main ordering estimate. Estimated weight depends on purchase volume and bulk density, so a high value can reflect a larger driveway, thicker layer, higher allowance, denser material, or several of those factors. Material cost is purchase volume × price and excludes excavation, delivery, geotextile, grading, drainage, compaction, taxes, and labor. The table divides each total into the base layer and added allowance, then cross-foots to the purchase total.

Worked example. The startup dimensions produce 100 m × 3 m × 0.15 m = 45.00 m³ of base volume. A 10% allowance adds 4.50 m³, so purchase volume is 49.50 m³. At 1.25 t/m³, estimated weight is 61.875 metric tons, displayed as 61.88 metric tons. At $25 per m³, material cost is $1,237.50. These same typed values appear in the initial results and workbook checkpoints.

Formula and planning assumptions

Base volume = length × width × compacted depth
Purchase volume = base volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Weight = purchase volume × bulk density
Material cost = purchase volume × price per volume unit

The geometry is straightforward, but field conditions are not. The National Institute of Standards and Technology's volume-unit guidance is useful when checking cubic-meter and cubic-yard conversions. Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing feet with inches or meters with centimeters without converting the depth.
  • Using loose delivery depth as though it were the final compacted thickness.
  • Applying a generic density when the supplier can provide a product-specific bulk density.
  • Entering a per-ton quote into a price field that is explicitly per cubic unit.
  • Ordering the exact calculated decimal without considering the supplier's minimum increment and truck payload.
