What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the volume and mass of fire glass required to cover a square, rectangular, or circular fire-pit opening to a chosen depth. It converts the geometric fill volume into weight by multiplying by the selected glass density. It is a purchasing and planning estimate, not a burner-layout approval, installation specification, or safety certification.

When to use it

Use it when planning a new fire-glass layer, comparing glass types with different densities, checking whether an advertised bag quantity is sufficient, or estimating how much material remains after changing the intended layer depth. Measure the actual fillable opening rather than the outside dimensions of the fire-pit enclosure.

How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a ready-to-use example: recycled fire glass, a 60 cm square opening, and a 7.5 cm layer. The example results and Excel workbook are available immediately.
  2. Choose Glass type. Recycled glass sets density to 1.445 g/cm³ and reflective glass sets it to 1.500 g/cm³. Choose custom density when your supplier provides a product-specific value.
  3. Choose Fire pit shape. For Square, enter Side length. For Rectangle, enter Length and Width. For Circle, enter Diameter.

Input guide

Glass type is required and controls the density assumption. Glass density is required, accepts a plain decimal from 0.1 to 5.0 g/cm³, and can be edited only in Custom density mode; a realistic example is 1.445. Higher density increases weight without changing volume. Do not paste units into the field. Fire pit shape is required and determines the area formula. Side length, Length, Width, or Diameter must be positive centimeter measurements; 60 cm is a realistic example. Fire glass depth is required, must be positive, and directly scales volume and weight; 7.5 cm is the startup example. Decimal points are accepted, but decimal commas and scientific notation are rejected to avoid ambiguous interpretation.

Output guide

Total weight is the estimated mass in kilograms. Surface area is the opening area in square centimeters. Fill volume is shown in liters, using the exact identity 1,000 cm³ = 1 L; NIST explains standard SI volume relationships. Weight in pounds is a unit conversion for purchasing. 20 lb bags rounds the pound estimate upward to whole bags, so it is a conservative package count rather than an exact product recommendation. Worked example

For the startup square, area is 60 × 60 = 3,600 cm². Multiplying by a 7.5 cm layer gives 27,000 cm³, or 27.00 L. Multiplying 27,000 cm³ by 1.445 g/cm³ gives 39,015 g, which displays as 39.02 kg and 86.01 lb. Dividing by 20 lb per bag and rounding up gives 5 bags.

How the estimate works

The calculator first finds plan area: side² for a square, length × width for a rectangle, or π × diameter² ÷ 4 for a circle. Volume equals area × depth. Weight equals volume × density. Because density can vary by manufacturer, bead size, finish, and packing, a supplier's stated value should take priority over a generic preset. Small voids between pieces also mean a geometric estimate should be treated as a planning quantity, not a laboratory mass measurement.

Depth is often the most influential planning input because doubling depth doubles both volume and weight. Verify that the layer does not obstruct required burner openings, air flow, ignition components, or drainage.
