How to use the fence post depth calculator
What this calculator does. This tool estimates two linked dimensions: the portion of a fence post below grade and the total post length you should plan to purchase. It multiplies the finished above-ground post height by a chosen depth-to-height ratio, then adds that depth back to the visible height. It is useful for early material planning, comparing post sizes, checking whether an existing post is long enough, and preparing a rough hole-depth target before site work. It does not determine code compliance, footing diameter, concrete volume, frost protection, wind resistance, or the structural adequacy of a particular post and fence system.
When to use it. Use it when laying out a new garden, privacy, livestock, or chain-link fence; when comparing a one-third embedment rule with a more conservative two-fifths ratio; when checking stock post lengths before ordering; or when converting a familiar imperial plan into metric units for documentation.

Input guide. Unit system is a required two-option control. Choose imperial for feet or metric for meters; a common mistake is changing the label in a separate document without converting the number, which this calculator avoids. Post height above ground is a required positive decimal. In imperial mode, enter feet such as 6 or 5.5; in metric mode, enter meters such as 1.8. Use a period for decimals and do not enter mixed notation such as “6 ft 2 in.” A taller post increases both calculated depth and total length proportionally. Depth-to-height ratio is a required percentage greater than 0 and no more than 100. Enter 33 for one-third or 40 for two-fifths. A higher ratio increases embedment and the required purchased length. Do not confuse 33% of the above-ground height with 33% of the total post length; those are different quantities.
Output guide. Recommended post depth is the estimated below-ground embedment in the selected length unit. Total post length is the sum of the visible height and depth. Depth share of total length expresses embedment as a percentage of the complete post, which is lower than the input ratio because the input ratio uses only the above-ground height as its base. The formula summary shows the exact current multiplication and addition. The planning table lists the current height plus nearby shorter and taller scenarios, all using the same selected ratio. These are mathematical estimates; a zero or negative input is invalid rather than a meaningful design result.
Worked example. With a 6.00 ft above-ground height and a 33.00% ratio, depth equals 6.00 × 0.33 = 1.98 ft. Total post length equals 6.00 + 1.98 = 7.98 ft. The embedded portion is 1.98 ÷ 7.98 × 100 = 24.81% of the complete post. Those values match the first-open results and workbook checkpoints.

Formula, assumptions, and practical limits
The calculator uses two identities: post depth = above-ground height × ratio, and total length = above-ground height + post depth. The model treats the ratio as a planning assumption, not a universal rule. Soil strength, frost movement, wind exposure, fence porosity, post spacing, gate loads, drainage, post material, and local code can all justify a different embedment or engineered footing. Corner, brace, and gate posts often carry much greater loads than ordinary line posts, so one ratio should not automatically be applied to every post in a project.
Before excavation, verify underground utility locations through the service applicable in your area and check local permit and setback requirements. In cold regions, frost depth may control the minimum foundation depth. In loose or saturated soil, greater depth or a larger footing may be needed. For treated wood, confirm the treatment is rated for ground contact, and avoid details that trap water at the post base. Buy a little extra length when practical so field trimming remains possible.
