How to use this drywall calculator

What this calculator does. This tool estimates the surface area to be covered with drywall in a rectangular room, subtracts rectangular door and window openings, adds an optional ceiling and optional triangular sloped-wall sections, then converts the net area into a whole-sheet quantity and estimated panel cost. It is useful for early material planning, comparing common sheet sizes, checking a contractor takeoff, or preparing a shopping list. It does not determine framing, fastener spacing, board thickness, fire rating, moisture suitability, joint compound, tape, corner bead, delivery charges, labor, or code compliance. Installation details should follow the applicable project documents and recognized guidance such as the Gypsum Association's GA-216 application and finishing guidance.

When to use it. Use the calculator when planning a single rectangular bedroom, office, garage bay, or similar enclosed space; when deciding whether 4 × 8, 4 × 10, or 4 × 12 ft sheets reduce sheet count; when estimating the material effect of including a ceiling; or when subtracting repeated doors and windows from the room envelope. For irregular rooms, divide the project into simple areas and calculate each section separately rather than forcing complex geometry into one rectangular model.

How to calculate. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: a 16 ft × 12 ft room, 8 ft high, with the ceiling included, one 3 ft × 7 ft door, two 3 ft × 4 ft windows, 4 × 8 ft sheets, and a $12.00 panel price. The first estimate and a validated Excel workbook are available immediately.

  1. Replace Room length, Room width, and Room height with inside dimensions in decimal feet.
  2. Keep Include ceiling checked when the ceiling will receive drywall. Clear it for walls only.
  3. For triangular areas beneath a roof slope, enter Sloped-wall base, Sloped-wall height, and the whole-number Sloped sections count. Leave all three at zero when none exist.
  4. Enter the whole-number Doors and Windows counts and the width and height of each repeated opening. Use separate calculations when openings differ materially in size.
  5. Select Drywall panel size, enter Cost per panel, review the live results and area table, then select Download Excel for the current model.

Input guide. Room length, width, and height are required positive decimal numbers in feet; values such as 16, 12, and 8 are accepted, while blank, negative, scientific-notation, or comma-decimal entries are rejected. Increasing any dimension increases wall area; increasing length or width also increases ceiling area when included. Include ceiling is a required yes/no control. Sloped-wall base and height are optional nonnegative decimal feet, and Sloped sections is an optional nonnegative whole number; all three must describe the same repeated triangular shape, whose area is base × height ÷ 2. Doors and Windows are nonnegative whole counts. Their width and height fields are nonnegative decimal feet; increasing opening area reduces net drywall area. Drywall panel size is required and controls the square feet covered by each sheet. Cost per panel is a required nonnegative U.S. dollar amount such as $12.00; it changes cost but not sheet count. A common mistake is entering inches as feet, so convert 6 inches to 0.5 ft before entry.

Output guide. Gross room area is the sum of wall area, included ceiling area, and triangular sloped sections. Openings area is the combined rectangular area of doors and windows. Net room area is gross area minus openings and cannot be negative. Number of panels divides net area by the selected panel area and rounds up to a whole sheet. Total panel cost multiplies whole panels by Cost per panel. The summary pills repeat net area, selected panel size, and sheet count. The table shows each component and its formula basis. All outputs are planning estimates; zero net area means the entered openings equal or exceed the modeled surfaces.

Worked example. The startup room has wall area 2 × (16 + 12) × 8 = 448 sq ft and ceiling area 16 × 12 = 192 sq ft, giving 640 sq ft before openings. One 3 × 7 ft door removes 21 sq ft and two 3 × 4 ft windows remove 24 sq ft, so net area is 595 sq ft. Dividing by a 32 sq ft sheet gives 18.59375, which rounds up to 19 panels. At $12.00 each, the estimated panel cost is $228.00. These values update immediately when any input changes.

Formula and planning notes

For a rectangular room, wall area equals 2 × (length + width) × height. Ceiling area equals length × width. Each triangular sloped section equals base × height ÷ 2. Door and window areas are counts multiplied by their rectangular dimensions. The calculator subtracts openings only after all included surfaces are added, then divides the nonnegative net area by the chosen sheet area and rounds upward because partial sheets must be purchased as whole panels.

Sheet count alone is not a purchase guarantee. Real installations create offcuts around corners, openings, electrical boxes, staggered joints, damaged edges, and transport loss. Many projects therefore add a waste allowance after the base estimate. The appropriate margin depends on room geometry, installer experience, board orientation, and whether offcuts can be reused. Larger panels may reduce seams but are heavier and harder to maneuver. Confirm panel type and thickness for moisture, fire, acoustic, structural, or code requirements before ordering.
