How to use the DIY shed cost calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the exterior floor, wall, and roof surface areas of a simple rectangular shed and multiplies those areas by your local material prices. It is useful for early budgeting, comparing roof shapes, checking whether a quoted material allowance is plausible, and preparing a shopping-list baseline before detailed takeoff work. It does not design structural members, verify snow or wind loads, subtract doors and windows, or determine permit compliance. Structural sizing and code approval should come from qualified local professionals and the rules adopted in your jurisdiction.

When to use it

Use it while choosing between a flat, single-slope, or gable roof; when comparing a compact garden shed with a larger workshop footprint; when testing different siding or roofing price points; or when estimating the effect of a deeper overhang. How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: an 8 ft by 6 ft slanted-roof shed, 8 ft walls, a 2 ft rise, a 1 ft overhang, and sample U.S.-dollar material prices. Its results and XLSX workbook are available immediately.
  2. Select Shed roof type. Choose flat for no rise, slanted for one continuous slope, or gable for two roof planes meeting at a ridge.
  3. Choose the Unit system. Switching between imperial and metric converts the current dimensions and per-area prices so the estimated total remains materially equivalent apart from display rounding.
  4. Replace the dimensions and price allowances with values from your plan and suppliers. Results update live.

Input guide

Shed roof type is required and accepts flat, slanted, or gable. A gable roof uses two sloping planes, while a slanted roof uses one. Unit system is required and accepts imperial feet/square feet or metric metres/square metres. Shed width (W), Shed length (L), and Wall height (H) are required positive decimal dimensions; examples are 6 ft, 8 ft, and 8 ft. Width and length set the footprint and perimeter, while height drives wall area. Do not enter inches into a feet field without converting them.

Roof rise (R) is required for slanted and gable roofs and must be zero or positive; 2 ft is a realistic small-shed example. Larger rise increases sloped rafter length and roof area. For flat roofs, rise is ignored. Roof overhang (O) is required and may be zero; 1 ft means the roof extends one foot beyond each wall edge. Confirm limits with local rules and water-shedding details. The three price fields are required nonnegative U.S.-dollar amounts per displayed area unit. Sample values are $12.50 per sq ft for the foundation, $9.75 per sq ft for walls, and $7.25 per sq ft for roofing. Enter material-only or installed prices consistently; mixing them makes the total misleading.

Output guide

Total cost of shed is the sum of foundation, wall, and roofing allowances. It is an estimate, not a contractor quote. Floor area is the exact rectangular footprint, width × length. Wall area is the perimeter wall area plus the triangular or sloped-end area created by roof rise. Roof area is the sloped covering area including overhang. Rafter length (S) is the slope distance across one roof plane, including overhang. The Area and cost breakdown table lists each component, its area, the entered unit price, and its extended cost. A zero price produces a zero component cost while retaining its physical area; a high total usually comes from larger surfaces, higher unit prices, or both.

Worked example

For the startup slanted-roof example, the floor area is 8 × 6 = 48.00 sq ft. Wall area is 2 × (8 + 6) × 8 + (6 × 2) = 236.00 sq ft. With a 1 ft overhang, the rafter length is about 8.43 ft and the roof area is about 84.33 sq ft. Multiplying each area by its displayed sample price gives the three component costs shown in the table, and their sum is the displayed total. Before purchasing, compare the estimate with a detailed bill of materials and include waste factors appropriate to panel sizes and cutting patterns. How the shed model works

The floor is modeled as a rectangle. Wall area starts with the perimeter multiplied by wall height. Slanted and gable roofs add the end-wall area associated with the rise. The roof calculation uses the Pythagorean relationship to find the sloped rafter length after overhang is included, then multiplies that slope length by the roof length including front and rear overhang. Gable roofs use two roof planes. These equations are appropriate for a simple symmetric rectangular shell; dormers, porches, offsets, unequal pitches, and complex foundations need a more detailed takeoff.
