How to use this deck stain calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the exposed deck area that will receive stain and converts that area into a liquid quantity. It combines the rectangular floor, an optional railing estimate, and optional stair treads and risers. It then applies the selected number of coats, the product coverage factor, and an allowance for overlap, absorption, spillage, and touch-up work. The result is a planning estimate, not a coating warranty or a structural design check. Product labels and the condition of the wood remain the final authority.

When to use it

Use it before buying stain for a new deck, when comparing one-coat and two-coat systems, when budgeting a maintenance coat, or when deciding whether leftover product is enough for railings and stairs. How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: a 20 ft by 16 ft floor, 36 ft of railing, four steps, two coats, 175 ft² per gallon coverage, and a 10% allowance. Its example workbook is ready immediately.
  2. Choose Unit system. Imperial uses feet, inches, square feet, and gallons; metric uses meters, centimeters, square meters, and liters. Changing the selector converts existing measurements instead of relabeling them.
  3. Replace Floor length and Floor width. Select whether to include a railing and steps, then enter only the measurements that apply.
  4. Set Number of coats, copy the Coverage factor from the stain label, and adjust Allowance for rough wood or application losses.
  5. Read Stain required, Total stainable area, Coated area, Base quantity, and Purchase quantity. The chart and table show which deck elements drive the estimate.
  6. Select Download Excel to export the current validated model. Reset clears the demonstration and calculated state; export stays disabled until a complete valid project is entered again.

Input guide

Unit system is required and accepts Imperial or Metric. Floor length and Floor width are required positive decimals; examples are 20 ft and 16 ft. Increasing either raises area proportionally. Do not enter a combined “20×16” expression. Include railing is required. When enabled, Railing length and Railing height must be positive lengths, while Railing surface factor selects a 40%, 65%, or 100% stainable fraction of a two-sided rectangular envelope. The factor is an approximation: open balusters expose less material than a solid privacy panel.

Include steps is required. When enabled, Number of steps is a whole number from 1 to 200; Step width, Tread run, and Riser height are positive measurements. The sample uses four 4-ft-wide steps with an 11-in run and 7-in rise. The formula counts one tread and one riser per step. Do not enter the full staircase run in the per-step field.

Number of coats is a whole number from 1 to 10. Coverage factor is the area one gallon or liter covers for one coat and must be positive; 175 ft²/gal is only a planning example. Allowance is an optional percentage from 0% to 50%; the sample uses 10%. Higher coats, lower coverage, or a higher allowance increase stain required. Output guide

Stain required is the estimated liquid volume after allowance. Total stainable area is the one-coat sum of floor, railing, and steps. Coated area multiplies that total by the coat count. Base quantity divides coated area by coverage before allowance. Purchase quantity rounds stain required up to the next whole gallon or liter as a conservative shopping quantity. A zero result appears only when the project is incomplete or all optional elements are excluded and the floor is zero, which is not accepted as valid. The Area breakdown table reports each element's area, share of total area, and stain volume with coats before the allowance.

Worked example

For the startup example, the floor is 20 × 16 = 320.0 ft². The railing envelope is 36 × 3 × 2 = 216.0 ft²; applying the 65% open-baluster factor gives 140.4 ft². Four steps at 4 ft wide with an 11-in tread and 7-in riser add 24.0 ft². Total stainable area is 484.4 ft². Two coats create 968.8 ft² of coated area. Dividing by 175 ft²/gal gives 5.54 gal before allowance; adding 10% gives 6.09 gal, so the conservative purchase quantity is 7 gal. These exact values are reflected in the live model and export.

Planning assumptions and practical checks

Coverage printed on a can is normally a range rather than a guarantee. Rough-sawn boards, weathered fibers, end grain, cracks, and thirsty softwood can consume more finish. Smooth, previously sealed wood may consume less, but poor penetration can also signal that the surface is not ready. Test a small area, follow preparation and drying instructions, and avoid applying more product than the manufacturer recommends.

The calculator's unit conversion uses the international foot definition. NIST documents exact and approximate conversion practices in its unit conversion guidance. Liquid conversion uses 1 U.S. gallon = 3.785411784 liters. Rounding happens only for display and purchase planning; calculations retain full precision.
