What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the minimum indoor floor area for a flock made up of regular-size and bantam chickens. It uses the number of birds and the place where they spend most of the day to select a planning allowance for each bird type. The result is a space-planning estimate, not a building permit, animal-health guarantee, or substitute for checking local zoning, setback, predator-protection, ventilation, and sanitation requirements.
When to use it
Use it while comparing ready-made coops, sketching a new backyard coop, deciding whether an existing shed can be converted, or checking how a planned flock expansion changes the required indoor footprint. It is also useful for testing whether a coop marketed for a certain number of birds provides enough floor area under your management style.
How to calculate
- The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: 10 regular chickens, 12 bantams, and daytime run access. Its first result is 64 ft², and the Excel workbook is available immediately.
- Choose During the day, where are your chickens mostly? Select the coop for birds confined indoors most of the day, the run for birds that normally use a fenced outdoor run, or the yard for birds that free-range.
- Enter whole numbers in Number of regular size chickens and Number of bantam size chickens. At least one count must be above zero.
- Read Minimum coop floor area, then review each bird type's subtotal, the average area per bird, and the example side length for a square footprint.

Input guide
During the day, where are your chickens mostly? is required. It accepts one of three management modes. “Inside the coop” uses 10 ft² per regular chicken and 4 ft² per bantam; “In a fenced run” uses 4 ft² and 2 ft²; “Free-ranging in the yard” uses 3 ft² and 1 ft². Choosing a more confined mode increases the indoor floor recommendation. Do not select “yard” merely because the birds sometimes leave the coop; use it only when they genuinely spend most daytime hours outside.
Number of regular size chickens is a required whole-number field from 0 to 10,000; 10 is a realistic example. A higher count increases the result by the current regular-bird allowance for each added bird. Decimals, negative values, scientific notation, commas used as decimal marks, and mixed text are rejected. Number of bantam size chickens follows the same rules; 12 is the startup example. Bantams use a smaller allowance, but individual breeds still differ, so avoid assuming every small-looking bird is a bantam.
Output guide
Minimum coop floor area is the combined recommended indoor area in square feet. Regular-bird share and Bantam-bird share show each group's contribution. Example square side is the square root of total area and gives one possible side length only; a rectangular coop with the same area can work just as well. Total flock is the exact bird count. Regular chicken allowance and Bantam chicken allowance expose the selected per-bird rates. Average area per bird divides total area by flock size and is useful for comparing mixed flocks, but it should not replace the separate breed-size allowances.
Worked example
With daytime run access, the allowance is 4 ft² for each regular chicken and 2 ft² for each bantam. Ten regular birds require 10 × 4 = 40 ft². Twelve bantams require 12 × 2 = 24 ft². Adding the subtotals gives 40 + 24 = 64 ft². A square with the same area would have sides of √64 = 8.00 ft. The table and downloaded workbook use these same inputs and outputs.

How the estimate works
Total indoor area = regular chickens × regular allowance + bantam chickens × bantam allowance
The allowance changes with daytime access. Birds kept inside most of the day need the largest indoor footprint because feeding, drinking, movement, dust bathing, and social spacing all happen within the same enclosure. Birds with a run can use a smaller indoor area because part of their daytime activity moves outdoors. Free-ranging birds use the coop mainly for shelter, laying, and roosting, so the indoor planning allowance is smallest.
Space alone does not make a good coop. Ventilation, dry litter, predator resistance, safe roosts, nest-box access, and easy cleaning can matter as much as raw floor area. The University of Minnesota notes that quality coops should protect birds from weather and predators and provide ventilation, roosting space, and suitable nesting arrangements. Practical planning considerations
- Round up, not down. A 64 ft² estimate should become a practical footprint such as 8 × 8 ft, not a smaller nominal size.
- Separate indoor and outdoor space. This result excludes the run and yard. Outdoor space should be planned independently.
- Allow for equipment. Feeders, waterers, nest boxes, partitions, and storage can reduce usable floor area.
- Plan for cleaning. Human access and removable litter often justify extra width or a service aisle.
- Check flock behavior. Aggression, feather pecking, persistent wet litter, or birds avoiding parts of the coop can signal that the layout or usable space is inadequate.
