How to use this brick calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the number of whole bricks required to cover a rectangular wall face. It combines wall area, the face dimensions of one brick, mortar-joint thickness, the selected number of wall leaves, and a waste percentage. It also estimates brick purchase cost when a price is entered. The result is a planning quantity, not a structural design, bond-pattern layout, mortar-volume takeoff, or substitute for project drawings and local code requirements.
When to use it
Use the estimate when preparing a preliminary material list, comparing brick sizes, checking a supplier quote, or testing how a waste allowance changes an order. It is also useful before a site visit because it shows which dimensions must be confirmed. For formal estimating, compare the result with the Brick Industry Association's dimensioning and estimating guidance for brick masonry.
How to calculate
- The calculator opens with a ready-to-use example: a 20 ft by 8 ft single wall, 7.625 in by 2.25 in brick face, 0.375 in mortar joint, 5% waste, and $0.85 per brick. Its Excel workbook is available immediately.
- Choose Type of wall, then replace the wall and brick dimensions with measured values. Keep wall measurements in feet and brick/joint measurements in inches.
- Enter Brick wastage and, when cost is needed, Price per brick. Results update live.
- Read Total bricks needed as the rounded whole-brick order quantity. Review the breakdown table to separate the base requirement from waste.
- Select Download Excel to create a current-state workbook. Reset clears the demonstration and calculated state; Excel export remains disabled until all required fields are complete and valid again.
Input guide
Type of wall is required and accepts Single wall or Double wall. Double wall applies two brick leaves, so it approximately doubles the base quantity. Choose it only when two separate brick faces are actually being built. Wall length and Wall height are required positive decimals in feet; 20 ft and 8 ft are realistic examples. Enter the net rectangular dimensions being estimated and deduct major openings separately when drawings require it. A common mistake is mixing inches into these fields.
Brick length, Brick height, and Brick width are required positive decimals in inches. The example uses 7.625 × 2.25 × 3.625 in. Length and height define the exposed face used in the count; width is retained for the material record because it matters to the selected unit and wall system. Do not enter nominal module dimensions when your supplier lists actual dimensions. Mortar joint thickness is required in inches and must be greater than zero; 0.375 in is a common planning value. The joint is added once to face length and once to face height to form the nominal module. The BIA's guide specifications discuss mortar-joint limits and quality control.
Brick wastage is required as a percentage from 0 to 100. Five percent is the example. Increase it for complex cuts, fragile units, sorting, or uncertain site handling; reduce it only when project experience supports a lower factor. Price per brick accepts a nonnegative U.S.-dollar amount such as $0.85. It is optional for the quantity calculation, but a blank value makes Cost of bricks unavailable. Do not enter a price per pallet or per thousand without converting it to a per-brick value.
Output guide
Total bricks needed is the final whole-brick order estimate after wall layers and waste. Bricks needed is the rounded base requirement before waste. Waste allowance is the difference between those two quantities. Wall area is the exact rectangular area in square feet. Cost of bricks multiplies the final order by the current per-brick price. The summary pills repeat wall area, coverage rate, and selected wall type. In the table, Quantity shows whole bricks, Unit price shows dollars per brick, and Extended cost shows the corresponding subtotal. All values are estimates; whole-brick quantities are intentionally rounded upward.
Worked example
The startup wall area is 20 × 8 = 160 ft². The brick module face is (7.625 + 0.375) × (2.25 + 0.375) = 21.000 in², or 0.145833 ft². Dividing 160 by 0.145833 gives 1,097.142857 bricks for one wall leaf. The calculator rounds the base requirement up to 1,098 bricks. Applying 5% waste to the unrounded requirement gives 1,152 whole bricks after rounding up. At $0.85 each, the displayed cost is $979.20. Those same typed values appear in the startup workbook.

How the formula works
The calculator converts the brick's nominal face module from square inches to square feet, divides wall area by that module, and multiplies by one or two wall leaves. Waste is applied to the unrounded base quantity so the final rounding is not inflated by rounding twice. Because bricks are discrete, the base and final order values are rounded upward. This method is appropriate for broad rectangular face-area estimates, but detailed bonds, corners, piers, arches, openings, soldier courses, and special units should be measured separately from drawings.
Planning tips and common mistakes
- Confirm whether supplier dimensions are actual or nominal. Adding mortar to an already nominal module can understate the quantity.
- Measure openings and returns consistently. A wall's gross rectangle is not always its net brick face.
- Order in supplier pack quantities. The calculator reports individual bricks, so round up again when pallets or cubes cannot be split.
- Keep a documented waste assumption. Breakage, color sorting, cuts, and future repair stock can justify different allowances.
- Use drawings and professional guidance for structural wall thickness, reinforcement, movement joints, bracing, and code compliance.
