Counts are layout estimates. Linear material assumes full-height boards and battens, horizontal furring runs across the wall, and trims run across the wall width. Openings reduce net area but do not automatically remove whole vertical pieces from the layout.
How to use this board and batten calculator
What this calculator does. It estimates a practical vertical board-and-batten layout from wall dimensions, board face width, and clear spacing. It reports the number of boards and battens, horizontal furring rows, trim count, net wall area, and linear material by component. It is useful for early takeoffs and comparing layouts, but it does not determine structural fastening, local-code compliance, exact cut optimization, or manufacturer-specific installation details.
When to use it. Use it to budget an interior feature wall, plan exterior siding quantities, compare narrower versus wider spacing, or prepare a material list before asking a supplier for stock lengths. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: a 3 m by 5 m wall, 5 cm boards, 8 cm spacing, 60 cm furring spacing, two trims, and 10% waste. Input guide. Wall width and Wall height are required positive decimals in metres; 3 and 5 are realistic examples, and larger values increase area and material. Board width and Board spacing are required positive centimetre values; 5 cm and 8 cm create a 13 cm repeating pitch. Do not type unit letters or decimal commas. Number of doors and Number of windows are whole numbers of zero or more. Their companion Area per door and Area per window fields accept nonnegative square metres and reduce net wall area only when the count is above zero. Furring row spacing is a required positive centimetre interval; reducing it adds rows. Number of trims is a nonnegative whole number; two is common for top and bottom or edge treatment in this simplified takeoff. Waste allowance is a percentage from 0 to 50; it increases purchasing quantities but does not change layout counts.
Output guide. Net area is wall area minus entered opening area and cannot be negative. Number of boards is the minimum whole-board count needed to cover the wall width at the selected pitch; Number of battens is one fewer because battens cover interior seams. Rows of furring strip is the number of intermediate rows implied by the selected vertical spacing. Board material and Batten material are full-height linear totals. Furring strip includes the top and bottom runs in addition to intermediate rows, while Trim material multiplies trim count by wall width. The primary Total linear material with waste adds all four components after the allowance. These are planning estimates, not purchase-length optimization.
Worked example. With a 3 m wall width, 5 m height, 5 cm board width, and 8 cm spacing, the repeating pitch is 0.13 m. The board count is the ceiling of (3 + 0.08) ÷ 0.13, giving 24 boards, and the interior seam count gives 23 battens. At 60 cm furring spacing, the wall uses 9 intermediate rows; including top and bottom runs produces 30 m of furring. Base lengths are 120 m of boards, 115 m of battens, 30 m of furring, and 6 m of trim. Adding 10% waste produces the displayed 298.10 m total.

How the layout math works
The horizontal layout uses a repeating pitch equal to board width plus clear spacing. Adding one spacing allowance before dividing helps ensure the final board reaches the far edge; the result is rounded up because partial boards still require a whole piece. Battens are taken as the interior seams between boards. This convention matches a wall where the two outside edges are finished separately. Projects that also cover both outside seams with battens may need additional battens.
Openings are shown in net wall area because they affect cladding coverage, but this calculator keeps the board and batten counts tied to the full wall width. That is conservative for purchasing and avoids pretending that every door or window eliminates a predictable number of full-height pieces. Planning notes and common mistakes
Measure the actual finished surface, not only a drawing. Check corners, out-of-square walls, trim returns, and starter or closure pieces. Confirm whether your product is sold by linear length, area, or fixed board size. A 10% allowance is a reasonable starting point for cuts and defects, but complex openings or short stock lengths may justify more.
