How to use this vegetable seed calculator
What this calculator does. This tool estimates how many evenly spaced planting positions fit into one or more straight garden rows. It supports both direct sowing and transplant planning because the recommended distance for a seed can differ substantially from the mature spacing used for a seedling. The result is a layout estimate, not a guarantee of germination, yield, plant health, or local suitability. Soil condition, cultivar, bed width, row spacing, climate, and seed packet directions still matter.
When to use it. Use the calculator when buying seed, marking a new garden bed, checking whether a packet contains enough seed, planning transplant quantities, or comparing the capacity of two row layouts. It is especially useful when every row has the same usable length and the plants are placed at a consistent center-to-center distance.
How to calculate.
- Choose Seeds for direct sowing or Seedlings for transplant spacing.
- Select the Crop type. Choose Custom spacing when your seed packet, cultivar, or local extension recommendation uses a different value.
- Enter Row length in inches and the whole Number of rows.
- Read Total seeds or Total seedlings, then review the per-row count and unused length. The row table shows the exact capacity of every row.
- Use Download Excel to save the current inputs and row plan, or Reset to restore the starting example.
Input guide. Planting mode is required and accepts Seeds or Seedlings; switching modes changes the crop spacing table and can increase or decrease capacity. Crop type is required and selects a built-in spacing in inches. For example, Beans use 4 inches for both direct sowing and transplant planning in this model. The built-in values are planning defaults, so do not mistake them for a substitute for packet-specific instructions. Custom spacing appears only after Custom spacing is selected; enter a positive decimal such as 7.5, using a period as the decimal separator. Zero, negative values, commas used as decimal marks, and scientific notation are rejected. Row length is required, measured in inches, and accepts a positive decimal such as 120. A longer row can fit more positions, but a small increase may not change the integer count until another full spacing interval fits. Number of rows is required and must be a whole number from 1 to 10,000, such as 4. Increasing it multiplies the independently rounded capacity of one row.
Output guide. Total seeds or Total seedlings is the exact integer capacity produced by this spacing model. Spacing used reports the active crop distance. Per row is the floor of row length divided by spacing. Unused length per row is the remainder after all complete spacing intervals are allocated; a zero means the length divides evenly. Total planted row length is row length multiplied by row count. In the row-by-row table, Planting positions repeats the per-row capacity and Unused length shows the remainder for that row. High counts mean denser spacing, longer rows, more rows, or some combination of those factors. A valid result cannot be negative.
Worked example. With Seeds selected, Beans chosen, a 120-inch row, and 4 rows, the calculator uses a 4-inch spacing. One row fits floor(120 ÷ 4) = 30 planting positions. Because each of the four rows is evaluated separately, the total is 30 × 4 = 120 seeds. The unused length is 120 – (30 × 4) = 0 inches per row, and the total planted row length is 120 × 4 = 480 inches. How the spacing formula works
Positions per row = floor(row length ÷ planting spacing)
Total positions = positions per row × number of rows
The floor operation is essential. Suppose a 100-inch row uses a 12-inch spacing. The raw quotient is 8.333..., but only eight complete planting intervals fit. The remaining 4 inches cannot be pooled with the leftover length from another row because the rows are separate physical spaces. This calculator therefore rounds down before multiplying by the number of rows.
The model treats the row length as usable planting length and assumes one position at each complete spacing interval. Real gardens may need extra clearance at row ends, paths between rows, wider spacing for airflow, or narrower spacing for intensive methods. Always reconcile the estimate with the crop variety, seed packet, and local conditions.
