What this calculator does

This calculator estimates a minimum aquatic-turtle tank volume from the turtle's straight shell length. It applies the widely used planning rule of 10 US gallons for every inch of carapace length, converts the result to liters, and also estimates a practical water-depth range of two to three times the shell length. When you choose one of the listed species, it adds the upper end of that species' common adult length range and an adult planning tank. The result is a starting point for habitat planning; it does not determine the complete welfare needs of an individual animal, replace species-specific husbandry advice, or make an aquatic-tank recommendation for a terrestrial tortoise.

When to use it

Use it before buying a first aquarium, when checking whether a growing turtle has outgrown its present setup, when comparing a starter tank with an adult-sized purchase, or when estimating the water volume and depth that filtration and furnishings must accommodate. It is especially useful for avoiding the common mistake of selecting a tank around a hatchling's current size while ignoring future growth.

How to calculate

  1. Choose Your turtle's species when the species is known. Leave “Not sure / other species” selected for a current-size-only estimate.

Your turtle's species is an optional list. A listed species supplies a common maximum adult shell length for planning; for example, a red-eared slider uses 12 inches. Species ranges vary by sex and individual, so do not read the value as a guaranteed final size. Selecting a larger species raises only the adult planning result, not the recommendation calculated from the turtle's current measured length.

My turtle's shell length is required and accepts a positive number from 0.1 to 60 inches, or the equivalent in centimeters. A realistic juvenile value is 5 inches. Increasing the length increases the recommended tank and water-depth range in direct proportion. Empty text, commas used as decimal separators, scientific notation, mixed units, zero, negative values, and values outside the supported range are rejected rather than silently altered.

Shell length unit controls whether the entered measurement is shown in inches or centimeters. For example, 5 inches becomes 12.7 centimeters. Switching units converts the current value and keeps all results physically equivalent. A common mistake is to switch the unit and then re-enter the old number without converting it, which describes a different-sized turtle.

Worked example

For a 5-inch turtle, the calculation is 5 in × 10 US gal/in = 50 US gal. The calculator therefore displays 50.0 US gal, which converts to 189.3 L. The suggested water depth is 10 – 15 in. How the estimate works

The model is intentionally simple: tank volume in US gallons equals straight shell length in inches multiplied by 10. Centimeter entries are first divided by 2.54. Liters are then calculated from gallons using the NIST-recognized US liquid gallon relationship of 231 cubic inches and the exact inch-to-centimeter definition; for practical display this is 3.785411784 liters per US gallon. Because habitat geometry, basking platforms, substrate, and incomplete filling reduce usable water space, the nominal aquarium size should not be confused with the exact swimming-water volume.

Planning beyond tank volume

A suitable enclosure needs clean, temperature-controlled water; a dry basking area the turtle can climb onto safely; appropriate heat and UVB lighting; and filtration sized for the heavy waste load turtles produce. Larger water volumes are generally more stable and dilute waste better, but they do not replace water testing and maintenance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides practical advice for handling reptiles and cleaning their habitats safely. Wash hands after contact with the turtle, tank water, equipment, or waste, and keep habitat-cleaning items away from food-preparation areas.

Species choice matters. The listed adult lengths are common planning upper bounds, not biological guarantees, and males and females may differ substantially. Local animal-welfare rules may also set enclosure standards. When the calculator's result conflicts with current veterinary guidance for the species, use the larger, more protective requirement.
