What this calculator does
This calculator produces a quick, reproducible estimate by multiplying a tree's trunk circumference in inches, total height in feet, and a species-specific basic value. It is useful for rough comparisons, classroom exercises, preliminary documentation, and understanding how size and species assumptions change a simple monetary estimate. It does not determine fair-market timber value, landscape replacement cost, ecological benefits, legal damages, insurance compensation, or the condition-adjusted value of a particular tree. Professional appraisal methods can include species, condition, location, functional limitations, replacement cost, local markets, and the purpose of the assignment.
When to use it
Use it when you want to compare two similarly measured trees, create a first-pass estimate before speaking with an arborist, preserve a dated calculation for property records, or demonstrate the effect of circumference and height on a formula-based result. For a dispute, casualty claim, construction project, or high-value specimen, treat the result as a screening estimate only and consult a qualified professional.
How to calculate
- Select the exact Tree type. The calculator loads the matching Basic value from the visible species table.
- Measure and enter Circumference. Choose inches or centimeters; changing the unit converts the current entry rather than merely relabeling it.
- Enter total Height and choose feet or meters. The model converts metric measurements to inches and feet internally.
- Read Tree value, the normalized measurements, Size product, and the complete Formula. Results update live.
- Choose Download Excel to export the current inputs, outputs, species table, and assumptions as a validated workbook. Choose Reset to restore Maple, 17 inches, and 16 feet.
Input guide
Tree type is required and accepts one of the 24 listed species or wood categories. Maple is the default example. A species with a larger basic value increases the estimate in direct proportion; selecting the wrong species is therefore a major interpretation error. Circumference is required, must be greater than zero, and accepts ordinary en-US decimals such as 17 or 43.2. Commas, scientific notation, mixed units, and negative values are rejected rather than silently reinterpreted. Measure consistently around the trunk; forestry measurements are commonly standardized at breast height, and the University of Minnesota explains practical diameter-at-breast-height measurement. The Circumference unit is required and converts between inches and centimeters. Height is required, must be greater than zero, and accepts a decimal such as 16 or 4.88. The Height unit is required and converts between feet and meters. Larger circumference or height raises the estimate linearly; doubling either one doubles the result when the other inputs stay fixed.
Output guide
Tree value is the estimated dollar result. It is driven by all three substantive inputs and is zero only when a valid model factor or measurement is zero, which this interface does not allow. Basic value is the selected species factor in dollars per formula unit. Size product is circumference in inches multiplied by height in feet; it is an intermediate, not a physical volume. Circumference in inches and Height in feet show the normalized measurements used in the formula, even when metric units are selected. The Formula line exposes the exact displayed multiplication. The header pills repeat the selected species, current display-unit measurements, and species rate so you can verify the state at a glance. The species table lists every available factor and highlights the active row.
Worked example
For a Maple with a circumference of 17.00 in and a height of 16.00 ft, the basic value is $2.44. The size product is 17 × 16 = 272.00 in·ft. Multiplying by the species factor gives 272 × 2.44 = $663.68. If the same measurements are entered as approximately 43.18 cm and 4.8768 m, the normalized inputs and result remain the same apart from display rounding.

How the estimate works
The model is deliberately simple: tree value = circumference × height × basic value, with circumference standardized to inches and height standardized to feet. Because multiplication is linear, a 10% increase in one measurement produces a 10% increase in the estimate when the other factors do not change. Species selection can have an even larger effect because the factors vary widely. That sensitivity is useful for scenario comparison but also shows why accurate identification matters.
Measurement and interpretation tips
Use a flexible tape held level around the trunk and record where the measurement was taken. On slopes, leaning trunks, forks, swellings, or multi-stem trees, measurement rules can differ. Height is also easy to overestimate from the ground, so use a clinometer, laser rangefinder, measured shadow method, or trained observer when accuracy matters. Keep photographs and notes with the exported workbook, especially if the estimate supports a later conversation with an insurer, arborist, municipality, or property manager.
Do not confuse this result with timber value. Timber valuation normally depends on merchantable volume, grade, defects, access, logging costs, and current local markets. Landscape and amenity valuation asks different questions, including replacement cost and the tree's contribution to a site. A result that looks unusually high or low should prompt a review of species, units, circumference location, and total height before any decision is made.
