How to use the tree age calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the age of a living tree without cutting it down. It converts a trunk circumference into diameter when needed, then multiplies diameter at breast height, or DBH, in inches by a species growth factor. The result is a practical approximation for landscape inventories, classroom exercises, preliminary arboriculture records, and comparing similarly grown trees. It does not determine the tree's exact germination date, health, safety, or future life expectancy. Exact age usually requires reliable planting records, visible annual rings from a stump, or a professionally collected increment core.
When to use it
Use the estimate when cataloging mature trees on a property, preparing a community-tree inventory, checking whether a remembered planting date is plausible, or teaching the relationship between circumference, diameter, and radial growth. It is also useful before consulting an arborist because it gives you standardized DBH and circumference values to record.
How to calculate
The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: Red maple, growth factor 4.5, and a 75-inch circumference. The example is immediately exportable as a validated Excel workbook. To calculate another tree:
- Select the Tree species. The matching Growth factor fills automatically, but you may edit it or choose Custom growth factor.
- Choose Measurement type: circumference if you wrapped a tape around the trunk, or diameter if you measured straight across it.
- Enter the Circumference at breast height or Diameter at breast height, then choose inches, feet, centimeters, or meters. Enter a positive decimal with a period.
- Read Estimated tree age, the converted diameter and circumference, and Approximate planting year. Use Download Excel to save the current inputs and results.

Input guide
Tree species is a required choice from the list or Custom growth factor. Example: Red maple. Changing species changes the default growth factor and therefore age. A common mistake is choosing a visually similar species with a different growth pattern. Growth factor is a required positive decimal with no unit; 4.5 is realistic for red maple. Higher factors increase the age estimate for the same DBH, while lower factors decrease it. Do not enter an annual growth rate in inches; the factor is years per inch of DBH in this simplified model.
Measurement type is required and defines whether the numeric measurement is a wraparound circumference or a straight-line diameter. Selecting the wrong type changes the result by a factor of π. Circumference at breast height or Diameter at breast height is a required positive decimal. The unit selector accepts inches, feet, centimeters, or meters and converts the value internally to inches. Example: 75 inches circumference. Measure at the standard height rather than near a swollen root flare, and do not enter mixed text such as “6 ft 3 in.”
Output guide
Estimated tree age is the model's age in years, rounded to the nearest whole year for the main result. It is driven by DBH and growth factor; zero is not a valid calculated state because measurements and factors must be positive. Diameter at breast height and Circumference at breast height show the same trunk size in the selected unit, so one is an exact geometric conversion of the other. Approximate planting year subtracts the unrounded age estimate from the current calendar year and is only a rough orientation, especially for naturally regenerated trees. The summary pills repeat species, factor, and DBH, while the details table shows each formula step and the unrounded age.
Worked example
For the startup red maple, circumference is 75 inches. Diameter equals 75 ÷ π = 23.873 inches. Multiplying by the growth factor gives 23.873 × 4.5 = 107.43 years, displayed as 107 years. Using the current year 2026 gives an approximate planting year of 1919. The workbook stores the typed measurement, converted DBH, factor, unrounded age, rounded display age, and planting year.
Formula, assumptions, and measurement quality
Estimated age (years) = diameter at breast height (inches) × growth factor. If circumference is measured, diameter = circumference ÷ π.
The formula assumes the chosen growth factor represents average lifetime diameter growth for that species. Real growth is not constant: young trees, crowded trees, irrigated landscape trees, drought-stressed trees, and trees on unusually rich or poor sites may depart substantially from the average. For professional inventories, follow a repeatable measurement protocol and note trunk defects or nonstandard measurement heights.
For leaning or irregular trees, measure on the uphill side and avoid burls or branch unions where possible. The Forest Service measurement handbook provides detailed DBH procedures. When a management, hazard, legal, or high-value decision depends on age, consult a qualified arborist or forester rather than relying on this estimate alone.
