How to use this raw dog food calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates a dog's daily raw-food mass from body weight, then divides that total among seven recipe categories. It is useful for portion planning, shopping lists, batch preparation, and comparing adult and puppy feeding assumptions. It does not determine whether a recipe is complete and balanced, diagnose body condition, or replace a veterinarian or qualified veterinary nutritionist. Raw feeding can carry nutritional and food-safety risks, so treat the result as a planning estimate rather than an individualized prescription.
When to use it
Use the tool when you want to estimate a starting daily portion for a healthy adult dog at ideal body condition, prepare a puppy batch using an age-based percentage, convert an existing plan between pounds and kilograms, or test a custom BARF-style percentage split before shopping. It is especially helpful when the percentages must add to exactly 100% and you want the daily and weekly ingredient masses calculated consistently.
How to calculate
- Choose Life stage. Select Adult dog for the 2.5% model or Puppy for the age-based model.
- For a puppy, choose Puppy age. Younger puppies use a larger portion relative to body weight.
- Enter Dog's ideal body weight as a positive decimal and choose Weight unit. The unit switch converts the number already entered.
- Review or edit the seven Daily recipe percentages. The total must equal 100% before results or export are valid.
- Read Required amount of food, Feeding rate, Weekly food, Monthly planning amount, and the ingredient table.
- Use Download Excel to save the current inputs and typed results in a workbook, or Reset to restore the adult, 30 lb, 70/10/5/5/7/2/1 starting plan.
Input guide
Life stage is required and accepts Adult dog or Puppy. Adult dog applies 2.5% of ideal body weight per day. Puppy enables Puppy age, which is required only for puppies and accepts the displayed age bands. The calculator uses 8%, 6%, 4%, 3%, and 2.5% respectively from the youngest to oldest band. These are broad planning assumptions; growth rate, breed size, activity, and health can change needs.
Dog's ideal body weight is required, must be greater than zero, and may be entered with a period as the decimal separator, such as 30 or 13.5. Commas, scientific notation, units pasted into the field, negative values, and ambiguous decimal formats are rejected. Weight unit is required and accepts pounds or kilograms. Switching units converts the current value using 1 kg = 2.2046226218 lb.
Muscle meat, Bone, Liver, Other organs, Vegetables, Seeds, and Fruits are required percentages from 0% to 100%. The adult defaults are 70%, 10%, 5%, 5%, 7%, 2%, and 1%. Increasing one category increases its ingredient mass, but another category must be reduced so the recipe still totals 100%. A common mistake is to treat liver and other secreting organs as one field without adjusting both percentages.
Output guide
Required amount of food is the estimated daily mass. It is shown in the selected unit and in a convenient secondary unit. Feeding rate is the percentage of body weight used by the model. Weekly food multiplies the daily estimate by seven, while Monthly planning amount uses 30 days. The Life-stage model names the selected assumption. The table reports Recipe share, Daily amount, and Weekly amount for every ingredient. Zero means the category's percentage is zero; a high value means that category occupies a larger share, not that it is automatically nutritionally appropriate.
Worked example
For an adult dog with an ideal body weight of 30 lb, the model calculates 30 × 2.5% = 0.75 lb of food per day. That equals 12.00 oz or about 340.19 g. With the default 70% muscle-meat share, muscle meat is 0.75 × 70% = 0.525 lb, or 8.40 oz per day. Bone is 1.20 oz, liver is 0.60 oz, other organs are 0.60 oz, vegetables are 0.84 oz, seeds are 0.24 oz, and fruits are 0.12 oz. The weekly total is 5.25 lb.

Before changing a dog's diet, review the WSAVA global nutrition resources, including body-condition and nutritional-assessment tools. The U.S. FDA guidance on raw pet food diets explains contamination and handling concerns, while the CDC pet-food safety guidance covers safer storage, preparation, and hygiene.
How the estimate works
daily food = body weight × feeding rate
ingredient amount = daily food × ingredient percentage
The adult starting point is 2.5% of ideal body weight per day, the midpoint of a commonly used 2% – 3% range. Puppy percentages are higher because growth increases needs relative to current body weight. The calculator keeps full precision internally and rounds only the displayed values. Weekly and 30-day amounts are arithmetic planning extensions of the daily estimate.
Practical interpretation and common mistakes
- Use ideal weight for an adult dog. Using current weight for an overweight dog can perpetuate overfeeding.
- Reassess the portion as body condition, activity, age, neuter status, and health change.
- Do not assume edible bone percentage alone guarantees an appropriate calcium supply.
- Separate liver from other secreting organs when following a recipe that treats them as distinct categories.
- Handle raw animal products with the same care used for raw human food, including clean surfaces, handwashing, cold storage, and avoiding cross-contamination.
