What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the internal volume of a rectangular rat cage and divides that volume by a planning allowance of 2.5 cubic feet, or about 70.8 liters, per rat. It helps you compare cages, check whether an enclosure has enough overall volume for a small group, and understand how a change in one dimension affects capacity. It does not certify that a cage is suitable. A good enclosure also needs safe bar spacing, solid resting areas, ventilation, climbing opportunities, hiding places, bedding, and regular out-of-cage activity.

When to use it

Use it while shopping for a cage, checking a second-hand enclosure, planning a custom build, or comparing two cages with different proportions. It is also useful after adding a permanent internal divider that reduces usable space. Measure the clear internal dimensions rather than relying only on a product's outside dimensions.

How to calculate

  1. Select Dimension unit: centimeters or inches. Changing the selector converts all three current measurements, so the physical cage remains the same.
  2. Enter the usable internal Height, Length, and Width as positive decimal numbers. Commas, scientific notation, negative values, and mixed units are rejected.
  3. Read Cage volume in liters and cubic feet. The results update immediately.
  4. Read Can fit at most. This is the whole-number floor of cage volume divided by the 2.5 ft³ allowance. A result below two is a strong prompt to choose a larger enclosure because pet rats are social animals.

Height, Length, and Width are required positive numbers up to 100,000 in the selected unit. A realistic example is 80 cm high, 80 cm long, and 50 cm wide. Increasing any one dimension increases volume in direct proportion. Common mistakes include entering outside dimensions, typing “80 cm” inside the field, using a decimal comma such as “80,5,” or forgetting that trays and dividers can reduce usable space.

Cage volume is the exact rectangular volume derived from height × length × width, displayed in liters and cubic feet. Space per rat is the fixed planning allowance of 70.8 L. Can fit at most is a conservative whole-number capacity estimate; zero means the volume is below one allowance, while a higher number only means the volume test passes for that many rats. Unused allowance is the volume left after subtracting the allowance for the displayed whole-number capacity. It is not wasted space – extra room is generally beneficial.

Worked example

For a cage measuring 80 cm × 80 cm × 50 cm, the volume is 320,000 cm³. Since 1,000 cm³ equals 1 liter, the cage volume is exactly 320 L. Converting to cubic feet gives about 11.30 ft³. Dividing 11.30 by 2.5 gives 4.52, so the whole-number result is 4 rats. Four allowances use about 283.2 L, leaving 36.8 L as unused allowance.

How the volume model works

Volume = height × length × width

The calculator converts each dimension to meters before multiplying, which produces cubic meters. It then converts cubic meters to liters and cubic feet. Capacity is calculated as the mathematical floor of cubic feet divided by 2.5. Flooring is important because a fraction of an allowance does not support an additional whole animal.

Volume alone can hide shape differences. A very tall, narrow cage and a broad, multi-level cage may have similar volume, but the second may offer better usable floor area and layout. Practical cage checks beyond volume

  • Choose bar spacing appropriate for the smallest rat in the group, especially juveniles.
  • Favor good ventilation and avoid aquarium-style housing as a permanent primary enclosure.
  • Provide solid shelves or covered platforms rather than prolonged exposure to bare wire flooring.
  • Add hammocks, hides, tunnels, chew-safe objects, and opportunities to climb and forage.
  • Keep more than one rat unless a veterinarian or rescue professional advises otherwise for a specific animal.
  • Confirm that doors are large enough for safe cleaning, handling, and emergency access.
