Conception / mating Day 0 Jul 1, 2026 Starting date used for all estimates.

Dates are calendar estimates, not a diagnosis. Individual pregnancies can differ, and abdominal palpation can cause injury if performed incorrectly.

How to use the rabbit gestation calculator

What this calculator does. This tool estimates a rabbit pregnancy schedule from a known or assumed conception date. It gives a date to begin pregnancy palpation, a date to place the nest box, a midpoint due date, and an expected birth window based on the selected rabbit type. It is useful for record-keeping and preparation, but it cannot confirm pregnancy, determine litter size, diagnose complications, or replace an examination by a rabbit-experienced veterinarian.

When to use it. Use the calculator after a planned mating, when reviewing breeding records, when preparing housing and nesting materials, or when coordinating observation around the likely kindling period. It can also help compare a remembered mating date with nesting behavior. The MSD Veterinary Manual overview of rabbits notes that palpation is most useful around day 12, while university extension guidance commonly places normal kindling near days 28 – 33.

How to calculate. The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: European / domestic rabbit and a conception date of July 1, 2026. The example workbook is immediately available. Follow these steps:

  1. Select the closest option under Rabbit type. The choice supplies the estimated minimum and maximum gestation days.
  2. Enter the Conception date in the browser's date format. This field is required and accepts dates from January 1, 2000 through December 31, 2100.
  3. Read the Expected birth window first, then use Palpate rabbit, Add nest box, and the timeline table as planning checkpoints.
  4. Select Download Excel to export the current inputs, outputs, and full timeline. Reset clears the demonstration and all results; Excel export stays disabled until a complete valid state is entered again.

Input guide. Rabbit type is a required categorical choice. Select the closest breed or species group, such as “Chinchilla rabbit (28 – 32 days).” A wider range produces a wider birth window; choosing an unrelated type can create false precision. Conception date is a required calendar date, not the date pregnancy was first noticed. For example, entering 2026-07-01 treats July 1 as day 0. Moving this date forward or backward shifts every output by the same number of days. A common mistake is entering the palpation date or observed nesting date instead of the mating date.

Output guide. Expected birth window is the interval from the selected type's minimum to maximum gestation day. It is an estimate, not a promise that birth will occur on either endpoint. Palpate rabbit is day 12 after conception; it marks when skilled palpation may become informative, not an instruction for an inexperienced person to squeeze the abdomen. Add nest box is day 28, a practical preparation checkpoint. Midpoint due date is the rounded midpoint of the selected range and is useful as a single planning date. Calendar length reports the maximum gestation day used. The summary pills repeat the selected gestation span and fixed preparation checkpoints. In the table, Milestone names the event, Pregnancy day counts from mating as day 0, Date shows the calculated calendar date, and Planning note explains how to use the row.

Worked example. With “European / domestic rabbit (28 – 35 days)” and July 1, 2026 as conception, day 12 is July 13, so that is the palpation checkpoint. Day 28 is July 29, which is both the nest-box date and the start of the estimated birth window. Day 35 is August 5, making the displayed window July 29 through August 5. The midpoint of 28 and 35 is 31.5 days; the calculator rounds to day 32, giving August 2 as the midpoint planning date. Every exported workbook cell uses these same underlying dates.

How the date model works

The calculation is date addition. The selected rabbit type supplies a minimum and maximum gestation length. Those day counts are added to the conception date to produce the earliest and latest expected kindling dates. The palpation checkpoint is conception plus 12 days, and the nest-box checkpoint is conception plus 28 days. The midpoint uses the rounded average of the minimum and maximum gestation values. Date arithmetic is performed in UTC internally so daylight-saving transitions do not shift a result by one calendar day.

Published guidance varies because “rabbit” can refer to several breeds and species, and because husbandry sources may describe an average rather than a full range. Oregon State University Extension reports a 28 – 35 day range with a 31-day average, while Mississippi State University's production guidance recommends placing a nest box on day 28. The calculator keeps those different ideas separate: a range for birth timing and fixed checkpoints for preparation.

Interpretation and safety

A date inside the estimated window does not prove that a doe is pregnant, and a date outside it does not by itself identify the cause. False pregnancy, an uncertain mating date, breed variation, litter size, health, and record errors can all change what an owner observes. Palpation is a learned technique; rough pressure can harm the doe or developing kits. When pregnancy status is uncertain, when the doe appears unwell, or when kindling does not occur as expected, seek professional veterinary advice rather than repeatedly handling the abdomen.

Prepare the nest box and bedding before the earliest likely birth date, keep water and appropriate food available, and observe without unnecessary disturbance. The calculator is best treated as a calendar and record-keeping aid. It helps you know when to prepare and when to pay closer attention, while medical decisions remain with a qualified veterinarian.
