How to use the Omega-3 for Dogs Calculator
What this calculator does. It estimates a daily combined EPA and DHA amount for a dog by multiplying a purpose-specific dose factor by metabolic body weight. Metabolic body weight is the dog's kilogram weight raised to the 0.75 power. This approach scales dose with body size more realistically than multiplying by ordinary kilograms alone. The result is an educational estimate of milligrams per day; it does not diagnose a condition, select a product, account for all dietary omega-3 already present, or replace a veterinarian's individualized recommendation.
When to use it. Use the calculator to prepare for a veterinary discussion, compare the EPA + DHA content of several products, translate a veterinarian's metabolic-weight dose into a daily milligram target, or understand why two dogs of different sizes do not receive doses in simple direct proportion to body weight. How to calculate.
- Enter Dog's weight as a positive number. Choose kilograms, pounds, or stone in Weight unit; changing the unit converts the current value rather than merely relabeling it.
- Choose Purpose / disorder. The calculator loads the corresponding factor in milligrams per kilogram to the 0.75 power.
- For Custom veterinary dose, enter the prescribed Custom dose factor. Use a period as the decimal separator and do not enter units or scientific notation.
- Read Estimated total omega-3 dose, then review the supporting outputs and highlighted row in the dose-factor table. Use the result as combined EPA + DHA, not total capsule weight or total fish-oil weight.

Input guide. Dog's weight is required, accepts a plain positive decimal, and must represent current body weight; for example, 15 kg. A larger weight raises both metabolic weight and the result, but less than proportionally. Avoid commas as decimal separators and avoid using an old or estimated weight when accurate dosing matters. Weight unit is required and accepts kg, lb, or stone; for example, 33.07 lb converts to about 15 kg. The common mistake is switching units mentally while leaving the numeric value unchanged; this interface converts automatically. Purpose / disorder is required and chooses a published factor; for example, Osteoarthritis uses 310 mg/kg⁰·⁷⁵. A higher factor increases the result directly. Do not interpret a menu choice as confirmation that supplementation is appropriate for a particular diagnosis. Custom dose factor is required only in Custom mode, must be a positive finite decimal, and might be 100 mg/kg⁰·⁷⁵ if that exact factor was supplied by a veterinarian. It changes the result one-for-one and should never be guessed from a product's front-label “fish oil” amount.
Output guide. Estimated total omega-3 dose is the calculated combined EPA + DHA amount in mg/day. A higher value means more active omega-3, not necessarily more capsules, because concentrations differ. Weight in kilograms is the normalized weight used in the formula. Metabolic body weight is kg⁰·⁷⁵ and is always positive for a valid weight. Dose factor is the selected or custom multiplier. Approximate grams is the same daily result divided by 1,000. The summary pills repeat current weight, purpose, and factor. The table columns show each purpose, its factor, and the corresponding estimate for the current dog; these are comparisons, not simultaneous doses.
Worked example. For a 15 kg dog with Osteoarthritis selected, metabolic body weight is 15⁰·⁷⁵ = 7.62199 kg⁰·⁷⁵. Multiplying 7.62199 by 310 mg/kg⁰·⁷⁵ gives 2,362.82 mg/day, displayed as 2,363 mg/day, or 2.363 g/day. The workbook exports the unrounded canonical result while applying a readable number format.

Formula and interpretation
Daily EPA + DHA (mg) = [weight in kg]⁰·⁷⁵ × dose factor (mg/kg⁰·⁷⁵)
The exponent means dose does not rise in a straight line with ordinary body weight. Doubling a dog's weight multiplies metabolic body weight by about 1.68, not by 2. This is why directly multiplying a factor by body weight can substantially overstate the intended amount. Always compare supplement labels using the listed EPA and DHA quantities. A capsule may contain far more total oil than active EPA + DHA.
Safety and practical limits
The selected factors are reference values, not universal prescriptions. Kidney disease and osteoarthritis dosing may sometimes be adjusted toward an upper limit under professional supervision. Diet, diagnosis, severity, duration, product purity, calories, gastrointestinal tolerance, clotting risk, and other medicines can all change the appropriate plan. Research on omega-3-enriched diets for canine osteoarthritis is summarized in a peer-reviewed systematic review and meta-analysis, but evidence does not make self-prescribing risk-free.
