How to use this mulch calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the volume of mulch required to cover a rectangular bed, circular bed, or a bed whose area is already known. It then converts that volume into the number of packaged bags, rounds the purchase quantity up to a whole bag, and optionally estimates total cost and transport weight. It is a material-planning tool, not a horticultural prescription: the appropriate mulch type and depth still depend on the plants, drainage, site conditions, and local guidance. The USDA describes mulch as a protective layer spread over soil and summarizes benefits such as moisture conservation and weed control in its garden mulch guidance.
When to use it
Use the estimate before comparing bulk and bagged products, planning a garden-bed refresh, checking whether a vehicle can carry the order, or estimating a landscaping budget. It is also useful when an irregular property plan has already been divided into smaller measured areas and you want one combined quantity.
How to calculate
- Choose Area method: Rectangle, Circle, or Known area.
- Enter the active dimensions. For Rectangle, provide Length and Width. For Circle, provide Radius. For Known area, enter the measured Known area.
- Select the unit beside each dimension. The calculator converts every measurement to one canonical volume before displaying cubic yards and cubic feet.
- Enter Mulch depth. A common landscape range is 2 – 4 inches, but use guidance suitable for your plants and site. University of Minnesota Extension discusses a 2 – 4 inch application range and the need to keep mulch clear of stems and trunks in its mulching guidance.
- Enter the package's Bag size. Add Price per bag and Weight per bag when you want cost and load estimates.

Input guide
Area method is required and determines which geometry fields are active. Length, Width, and Radius accept positive decimal measurements in feet, yards, or meters; the default rectangle is 6 yd by 3 yd. Known area accepts a positive area in square feet, square yards, or square meters; use it for irregular shapes after measuring or summing their component areas. Do not type unit symbols into numeric boxes, and use a period as the decimal separator. Changing any dimension changes area and every downstream result.
Mulch depth is required and accepts inches or centimeters; the default is 2 inches. Greater depth increases volume, bags, cost, and weight in direct proportion. Excessive mulch can harm plants, so do not treat a larger calculated quantity as automatically better. Bag size is required and accepts cubic feet, cubic yards, or liters; the default is 2 ft³. A larger bag reduces the number of bags without changing the underlying mulch volume. Price per bag is an optional nonnegative U.S. dollar amount; 0 means no cost estimate. Weight per bag is an optional nonnegative value in pounds or kilograms; 0 means no load estimate. Product moisture can make actual bag weight differ from the label or store estimate.
Output guide
Calculated area is the bed footprint in square feet and square yards. Mulch needed is the exact geometric volume shown primarily in cubic yards, with cubic feet and liters as equivalents. Exact bag count is volume divided by bag size and may be fractional. Bags to buy rounds that number up to the next whole bag so the nominal package volume covers the estimate. Estimated cost multiplies whole bags by price per bag. Estimated load multiplies whole bags by weight per bag. Purchased volume shows the package volume represented by the rounded purchase count, which is normally slightly higher than the exact requirement. These are estimates based on ideal geometry; settling, slope, voids, and irregular edges can change real usage.
Worked example
With the default rectangle, area is 6 yd × 3 yd = 18 yd². A 2-inch depth equals 2/36 yard, so required volume is 18 × 2/36 = exactly 1.000 yd³, or 27.00 ft³. With 2 ft³ bags, the exact requirement is 27 ÷ 2 = 13.50 bags, so the purchase quantity is 14 bags. At $4.00 per bag, estimated cost is $56.00. At 20 lb per bag, estimated load is 280 lb. The purchased package volume is 28 ft³, leaving 1 ft³ above the ideal geometric requirement.

How the estimate works
Volume = area × depth. Rectangle area is length × width; circle area is π × radius². Exact bags = required volume ÷ bag volume. Bags to buy = the mathematical ceiling of exact bags.
The model uses exact international conversions: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 yd = 3 ft, 1 in = 0.0254 m, 1 ft³ = 28.316846592 L, and 1 yd³ = 27 ft³. Results are rounded only for display; the workbook stores canonical numeric values.
Planning notes and common mistakes
Measure only the area that will actually receive mulch, subtracting patios, trunks, large rocks, and other excluded zones where practical. Do not confuse radius with diameter for a circular bed. Keep all dimensions in the selected units rather than mentally mixing feet and yards. Verify whether a retailer lists a bag in cubic feet or liters, because package size drives the bag count directly. Finally, treat cost and load as planning estimates: sales tax, delivery fees, wet material, compaction, and site waste are outside the geometric calculation.
