How to calculate

  2. To estimate forward, replace Mating date with the observed breeding date. The due date, typical window, timeline, pills, and workbook state update automatically.
  3. To estimate backward, edit Average due date. The tool subtracts 342 calendar days and updates the mating date and related milestones.
  4. Read the central due date together with the 332 – 352 day range. The range is more useful for preparation than treating one date as certain.

Worked example

How the date model works

The model uses calendar-day arithmetic rather than months because months have unequal lengths. Forward mode applies three offsets to the mating date: 332 days for the early boundary, 342 days for the average, and 352 days for the late boundary. Reverse mode first subtracts 342 days from the entered average due date to recover the estimated mating date, then rebuilds the same timeline from that date. This keeps all displayed values internally consistent.

The 21-date statement counts both endpoints of the 20-day span from day 332 through day 352. It does not mean labor lasts 21 days or that every date is equally likely. A value outside this range is not automatically abnormal; breeding-date uncertainty, individual variation, season, fetal factors, and maternal health can all affect timing.

Practical interpretation and common mistakes

Keep the mating date tied to the correct dam, sire, and breeding event. Multiple exposures can make the true conception date uncertain, so a range of possible mating dates should be retained in herd records rather than compressed into false precision. Do not use the calculator to decide whether an animal is pregnant. Pregnancy confirmation, assessment of fetal viability, nutrition changes, and management of overdue or distressed animals require veterinary judgment.
