How to use this livestock fence calculator
What this calculator does
This tool converts a proposed straight fence run into an estimated material list and installed cost. It counts terminal posts, brace posts, line posts, wire rolls, staples, and labor, then reports material cost, labor cost, total construction cost, and cost per foot. It is most useful for early budgeting, comparing post layouts, checking supplier quotes, and preparing a purchase list. It does not replace a site survey, structural design, local code review, or species-specific advice from an experienced fencing professional.
When to use it
Use the calculator before requesting bids, when comparing woven wire with multi-strand wire, when testing wider or tighter post spacing, or when deciding whether mixed wood-and-steel line posts reduce cost. It is also useful for estimating one paddock boundary at a time before combining several runs into a complete farm plan.
How to calculate

Input guide
Fence type is required. Woven wire uses one continuous fence-length run, while barbed wire uses five strands and high-tensile wire uses six. Post material controls the line-post mix; terminal and brace posts remain wood. Fence length is a positive number in feet, such as 1,000. Fence height is a positive number in feet, such as 4; it is documented but does not change the simple material count. Desired spacing of posts is the maximum bay length in feet. A smaller value increases line-post count; a larger value reduces it, but field conditions and fence type may limit practical spacing.
Wire length per roll is the usable footage supplied in one roll. Staple spacing is measured vertically along each wood-post wire contact: closer spacing raises the staple count. The four price inputs must be nonnegative U.S. dollar values. Labor cost is optional and entered as dollars per foot; zero is valid for a materials-only estimate. Avoid entering box prices as unit prices unless you first divide by the number of pieces.
Output guide
Total construction cost equals all material costs plus labor. Cost per foot divides that total by fence length. Material cost includes end posts, brace/wood posts, steel posts, wire rolls, and staples. Labor cost is the length multiplied by the labor rate. Total posts includes four 8-inch terminal posts, two brace posts, and the calculated line posts. Wire required is the fence length multiplied by the number of strands or panels implied by the selected fence type. Average bay length is the actual average spacing after rounding the number of bays upward. The table shows each item's quantity, unit, unit price, and extended total.
Worked example
With the defaults, a 1,000 ft woven-wire run at 12 ft maximum spacing requires 84 bays and therefore 83 interior line posts. The mixed-post option assigns 42 wood line posts and 41 steel line posts. Adding four terminal posts and two brace posts produces 89 total posts. One 1,000 ft woven-wire run needs 4 rolls when each roll contains 330 ft. At the default prices, the calculator adds the post, wire, staple, and labor amounts and displays the exact total and cost per foot in the results panel and workbook.

Planning assumptions and common mistakes
The model assumes one straight run with no gate and no intermediate corner. Curves, steep terrain, water crossings, corner assemblies, gate braces, rock drilling, and delivery can materially change the installed cost. For a perimeter with multiple sides, calculate each straight run separately or add terminal and corner assemblies explicitly to a contractor estimate. Use actual usable roll length rather than the nominal length when overlaps or tensioning waste are significant.
Post spacing is a maximum, not a promise that every bay will equal the entered value. The calculator rounds the bay count upward so the final spacing never exceeds the requested maximum. It then reports the actual average bay length. A low price estimate is not necessarily the most economical long-term design; durability, maintenance, animal behavior, visibility, and electrical performance may matter more than first cost.
