How to use this horse weight calculator
What this calculator does. This tool estimates the body weight of an adult Arabian, pony, or stock horse from four morphometric measurements. It also estimates an “ideal” weight from height and body length, then compares the two values. The result is useful when a livestock scale is unavailable, but it is not a diagnosis, a medication dose, or a substitute for weighing the horse on a calibrated scale. The underlying equations were developed for non-pregnant equids at least three years old and at least 112 cm tall; the peer-reviewed study indexed by PubMed explains the population and model.
When to use it. Use the estimate to track weight trends between veterinary visits, plan feed discussions, compare a horse with its own prior measurements, or prepare a rough trailer/load figure. For medication, dewormer, anesthesia, rapid weight change, pregnancy, illness, or an unusually built horse, obtain veterinary guidance and a scale weight whenever possible.
How to calculate.
- Choose Type: Arabian, Pony, or Stock horse. The selection changes the divisor and ideal-weight constant.
- Choose Measurement units. “Inches & pounds” accepts decimal inches and reports pounds; “Centimeters & kilograms” accepts decimal centimeters and reports kilograms. Switching converts every current measurement rather than merely relabeling it.
- Enter Height (A), measured from the ground to the third thoracic vertebra; Neck circumference (B), halfway between poll and withers; Girth circumference (C), snugly around the barrel behind the withers; and Body length (D), from point of shoulder to point of buttock.
- Read Actual weight estimate, Ideal weight estimate, Difference, and Difference from ideal. The comparison chart uses the same two weight values and the table shows the metric quantities used by the equations.

Input guide. Every measurement is required, accepts ordinary U.S.-style decimal notation such as 58 or 58.5, and must be greater than zero. Commas, scientific notation, unit letters, and mixed formats are rejected to avoid silently turning “1,5” into “15.” Height (A) and Body length (D) drive both actual and ideal weight; increasing either raises both estimates. Neck circumference (B) and Girth circumference (C) affect only actual weight, so inconsistent tape placement can change the apparent difference. A realistic adult Arabian entry is 58 in height, 36 in neck circumference, 70 in girth, and 58 in body length. Measure on level ground with the horse standing square and keep tape tension consistent.
Output guide. Actual weight estimate is the model's current body-weight estimate. Ideal weight estimate is a size-based comparison derived only from height and body length; it is not a universal target for every breed, discipline, age, or medical condition. Difference is actual minus ideal, while Difference from ideal expresses that difference as a percentage of ideal weight. Positive values mean the current estimate is above the model ideal, negative values mean it is below, and zero means the two formulas agree at displayed precision. The Model card and horse-type pill confirm which constants were applied. The chart's Actual estimate and Ideal estimate bars are the same values shown in the cards. In the detail table, Entered value is the selected unit, Metric model value is the converted centimeter measurement, and Role in calculation states whether the measure is used in both equations or actual weight only.
Worked example. For an Arabian measured at 58 in tall, 36 in around the neck, 70 in around the girth, and 58 in long, the calculator converts the four values to 147.32 cm, 91.44 cm, 177.80 cm, and 147.32 cm. It evaluates actual weight as girth1.486 × length0.554 × height0.599 × neck0.173 ÷ 3,441, producing 423.48 kg or 933.6 lb. Ideal weight is 2.8 × length + 4.2 × height – 577, producing 420.25 kg or 926.5 lb. The displayed difference is therefore +7.1 lb, or +0.77% of ideal weight.

How the formulas work
The actual-weight equation combines all four measurements using exponents fitted to observed equids. In metric units, estimated body weight equals girth1.486 × body length0.554 × height0.599 × neck circumference0.173, divided by a type-specific constant: 3,596 for Arabians, 3,606 for ponies, and 3,441 for stock horses.

The ideal-weight equation uses only body length and height because those dimensions are less directly altered by current fat cover. Ideal body weight in kilograms equals 2.8 × body length + 4.2 × height minus 611 for Arabians, 606 for ponies, or 577 for stock horses.

Interpreting estimates safely
A tape-based estimate is best treated as a repeatable monitoring tool. Use the same tape, person, anatomical landmarks, stance, and tape tension each time. A sudden change may reflect measurement inconsistency, gut fill, hydration, pregnancy, muscle development, illness, or a genuine change in body fat. Body condition score adds visual and hands-on assessment at the neck, withers, ribs, loin, shoulder, and tailhead. A horse can be close to a formula-based ideal yet still have an inappropriate condition for its health, breed, or work. Recheck questionable measurements and involve a veterinarian or qualified equine nutrition professional before making substantial feeding or health-management changes.
