This calculator translates a hamster's chronological age into an estimated human-age equivalent. It uses a set of life-stage benchmarks rather than one constant multiplier, because hamsters mature extremely quickly during their first months and then age more gradually. The result is useful for explaining a pet's general life stage, planning age-aware observation, and communicating with family members. It does not diagnose health, predict an individual lifespan, or replace advice from a veterinarian.

How to calculate

Input guide
My hamster is is required and accepts a non-negative decimal. The selected unit determines its meaning. For example, 45 with days old means 45 days; 1.5 with years old means one and a half years. Negative values, scientific notation, mixed text, and decimal commas are rejected instead of silently reinterpreted. A higher age generally increases the human-age estimate. The most common mistake is entering months while leaving years selected, or assuming that doubling hamster age always doubles the human equivalent.
Output guide
In human years is the interpolated estimate, rounded to one decimal when needed. Hamster age in months is the normalized age used by the model. Life stage groups the age as newborn, juvenile, young adult, adult, mature, senior, or exceptional longevity; these are descriptive bands, not clinical categories. Worked example
For a hamster aged 6 months, the benchmark table contains an exact match: 6 hamster months correspond to 34 human years. No interpolation is needed, so the calculator displays 34 years, normalizes the age to 6.00 months, and labels the stage Adult. For 7 months, the model lies halfway between 6 months/34 years and 8 months/42 years: 34 + (1 ÷ 2) × (42 – 34) = 38 human years.

How the model works
The calculator converts the entered age to months, then locates the two surrounding benchmark points. Between points it uses linear interpolation. This preserves every listed value while producing smooth estimates for ages such as 5.5 or 17 months. Beyond the final 36-month point, it extends the last segment's slope. That extension is mathematically consistent but should be interpreted cautiously because individual variation becomes more important at exceptional ages.

Interpreting age and health changes
A human-age equivalent is an educational analogy, not a biological identity. Species, genetics, husbandry, nutrition, and disease all affect how an individual ages. Watch the animal itself: activity, appetite, body condition, coat, breathing, posture, teeth, eyes, and normal routines are more important than a converted number. Sudden weight loss, breathing difficulty, reduced eating, abnormal posture, or marked lethargy warrants veterinary attention.
Common mistakes
- Using a constant rule such as one hamster year equals a fixed number of human years.
