How to use the grass seed calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates the surface area of a rectangular, circular, elliptical, or triangular lawn and multiplies that area by a grass-seed coverage rate. It is useful for shopping, budgeting, and checking whether the quantity printed on a seed bag is suitable for your measured site. It does not choose the best grass species, diagnose soil conditions, predict germination, or replace the application rate printed by the seed producer. Local climate, seed quality, slope, existing turf density, and planting method can all change the practical amount required.
When to use it
Use it when establishing a new lawn, overseeding thin turf, comparing package sizes, or dividing a large landscape project into measured zones. It is also helpful when a yard is not a simple rectangle: calculate each distinct section separately and add the seed quantities.
How to calculate
- The calculator opens with a complete demonstration: a 100 ft by 50 ft rectangular lawn and a coverage rate of 5 lb per 1,000 ft². The example result and XLSX workbook are immediately available.
- Select Lawn shape and enter the dimensions requested for that shape. Use positive ordinary decimals in the displayed unit; commas, scientific notation, and mixed-unit text are rejected.
- Choose Measurement system. Switching between Imperial and Metric converts current dimensions and the coverage rate rather than only changing their labels.

- Select Download Excel to export the current inputs and results. Reset clears the demonstration and all measurements; export then remains unavailable until a complete valid state is entered again.
Input guide
Lawn shape is required and determines the area formula. Rectangle uses Width and Length; Circle uses Radius; Ellipse uses Semi-axis A and Semi-axis B; Triangle uses Base and Height. Each dimension is a required positive decimal in feet or meters. A value such as 40.5 is accepted; zero, negative values, commas, unit letters, and scientific notation are rejected. Larger dimensions increase area and seed needs quadratically for a circle and proportionally for the other shapes. For an ellipse, the fields are radii from the center to the edge, not full diameters – a common source of a fourfold area error.
Measurement system is required. Imperial displays feet, square feet, pounds, and pounds per 1,000 ft². Metric displays meters, square meters, kilograms, and kilograms per 100 m². The conversion preserves the same physical lawn and application rate. Coverage rate is required and must be a positive decimal. A realistic example is 5 lb per 1,000 ft² for some fescue applications, but rates vary by species, blend, seed quality, and whether the work is new seeding or overseeding. The University of Minnesota notes that fine fescue is commonly seeded around 3 to 6 pounds per 1,000 square feet; always prefer the product label for the specific mix.
Output guide
Grass seed needed is the calculated seed mass in pounds or kilograms. It is an estimate driven by lawn area and coverage rate. A higher rate or larger lawn increases the result; zero is not valid because all required dimensions and the rate must be positive. Lawn area is the exact geometric area at calculator precision. Coverage units shows how many 1,000 ft² blocks or 100 m² blocks the lawn contains. 10% purchase buffer multiplies the direct estimate by 1.10; it is a planning comparison, not a planting recommendation. Selected shape and the summary pills restate the active geometry, area, and rate so exported and on-screen results are easy to audit. The rate table gives examples for planning only and is not linked to the current calculation unless you manually enter one of its values.
Worked example
The startup rectangle measures 100 ft by 50 ft, so its area is 100 × 50 = 5,000 ft². At 5 lb per 1,000 ft², the lawn contains 5 coverage units and needs 5 × 5 = 25.00 lb of seed. Adding the optional 10% shopping buffer gives 27.50 lb. These values match the first-open result cards and the downloadable workbook.
How the area and seed formulas work
Seed needed = lawn area ÷ coverage-area basis × coverage rate
Rectangle area is width × length. Circle area is π × radius². Ellipse area is π × semi-axis A × semi-axis B. Triangle area is base × height ÷ 2. These standard geometry relationships let the calculator reduce each supported shape to one area value before applying the seed rate. For irregular yards, split the site into several simple shapes, calculate each section, and sum the seed estimates.
Planning a successful seeding job
Coverage rate is only one part of establishment. Seed-to-soil contact, timing, moisture, and even distribution matter. Measure only the area that will actually be seeded. Subtract patios, paths, planting beds, buildings, and ponds, or calculate separate lawn sections around them. When buying seed, round up to available package sizes after checking storage life and return policies. Avoid automatically applying the 10% buffer as extra seed over the whole lawn; excess seeding can increase competition, disease pressure, and cost. Treat the buffer as purchase planning for calibration loss, uneven terrain, and later repair.
