How to use this grain conversion calculator
What this calculator does. This tool converts the mass of a selected agricultural commodity into U.S. bushels using a standard pounds-per-bushel value. It also shows the same mass in pounds and kilograms, can estimate a dollar value from a price per bushel, and can compare how many bushels the identical mass would represent for a second commodity. It is useful for planning and education, but it does not replace a certified scale ticket, an official grain inspection, or a contract-specific settlement calculation.
When to use it. Use it to estimate bushels from a truck, tote, or storage record stated by weight; compare wheat, corn, oats, soybeans, or another listed commodity on an equal-mass basis; translate a laboratory or inventory mass into a familiar grain-market unit; or make a quick gross-value estimate before quality adjustments. How to calculate:
- Choose an Agricultural commodity. The selection determines the standard test weight in pounds per bushel.
- Enter the Amount and choose its Amount mass unit. The accepted format is a nonnegative decimal with a period, such as 1250.5. Commas and scientific notation are rejected to avoid ambiguity.
- Optionally select Calculate price per bushel, then enter Price per bushel in USD/bu. This adds an estimated gross value.
- Optionally select Compare a second commodity and choose Second commodity. The calculator applies the same mass to both standard test weights.
- Read Equivalent bushels and the supporting results. Use Reset to restore wheat, 1,000 pounds, and the optional features off. Use Download Excel to export the current valid state and detail table.
Input guide. Agricultural commodity is required and must be one item from the list; for example, Wheat. A heavier standard pounds-per-bushel value produces fewer bushels for the same mass. Amount is required, may be zero or positive, and should represent the net commodity mass; for example, 1,000. Entering packaging weight by mistake overstates bushels. Amount mass unit is required and supports pounds, kilograms, grams, U.S. tons, and metric tons; switching the unit converts the current entered quantity so the physical mass remains unchanged. Calculate price per bushel is optional. When enabled, Price per bushel becomes required, accepts zero or a positive decimal, and directly scales the estimated total value. Compare a second commodity is optional; when enabled, Second commodity is required and changes only the comparison result, not the primary commodity result.
Output guide. Equivalent bushels is the primary conversion and is an estimate based on a standard test weight. Mass in pounds and Mass in kilograms are exact unit conversions at the displayed precision. Standard test weight is the selected commodity's nominal pounds per bushel. Estimated total value equals bushels multiplied by the entered price and remains “Not enabled” until pricing is turned on. Second commodity comparison reports the second commodity's bushels and the difference from the primary result. The detail table repeats each active commodity, its test weight, the common entered mass, bushels, and any enabled value estimate.
Worked example. With Wheat selected, an Amount of 1,000 pounds, and a standard test weight of 60 lb/bu, the calculation is 1,000 ÷ 60 = 16.6667 bushels, displayed as 16.67 bu. If pricing is enabled at $5.00 per bushel, estimated value is 16.6667 × $5.00 = $83.33. If Oats is selected as the second commodity, its 32 lb/bu standard produces 1,000 ÷ 32 = 31.25 bu, or 14.58 more bushels than wheat for the same mass.
How the conversion works
The core identity is simple: divide mass in pounds by the commodity's standard pounds per bushel.
A U.S. bushel is legally defined as 2,150.42 cubic inches, but bulk commodities do not all pack at the same density. Standard test weights provide a conventional mass associated with one bushel for a named commodity. Limits and good practice
Standard conversions are suitable for estimates, inventory reconciliation, classroom work, and preliminary pricing. Real lots may differ because moisture, variety, foreign material, broken kernels, compaction, and handling affect bulk density. For official transactions, use measured net weight and the applicable grading or contract rules. The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service publishes the United States grain standards, and the Federal Grain Inspection Service provides official grain inspection information. Keep the commodity name, unit, source weight, assumed test weight, and price basis together when sharing or exporting a result.
