How to use this feed conversion ratio calculator

What this calculator does. This tool estimates feed conversion ratio (FCR), the quantity of feed used for each unit of animal product. It can calculate live-weight gain FCR for meat animals, output-based FCR for milk or egg mass, and feed used per dozen eggs. It also estimates feed expenditure, feed cost per product unit, economic FCR based on accepted dressed weight, and technical FCR based on the number of animals leaving the feeding program. It is a record-analysis and budgeting tool, not a veterinary diagnosis, ration formulation, or guarantee of biological performance.

When to use it. Use it after a flock, herd, pond, or production group completes a measured feeding period; when comparing two feeds under genuinely similar housing, health, genetics, and environmental conditions; when budgeting the feed needed for a target production cycle; or when reviewing the difference between live-weight efficiency and saleable dressed-weight efficiency.

How to calculate.

  1. Enter Total feed consumed in kilograms. Use feed actually eaten during the measurement period, after accounting for returned feed and measurable waste.
  2. Choose Product type. For meat, enter Initial animal(s) weight and Final animal(s) weight. For milk or egg mass, enter the measured Product output in kilograms. For eggs per dozen, enter the number of eggs produced.
  3. Optionally enter Cost of feed per unit weight in U.S. dollars per kilogram to calculate total feed cost and cost per unit of product.
  4. Open Advanced farm indicators to enter Accepted dressed weight and Animals exited farmhouse. These values produce economic and technical FCR indicators.

Input guide. Total feed consumed is required, accepts a plain nonnegative decimal such as 1800, and directly raises FCR when output stays unchanged. Do not paste scientific notation or decimal-comma values. Product type is required and determines the denominator. Initial animal(s) weight and Final animal(s) weight are required in meat mode; both are combined group weights in kilograms, and final weight must be larger. A common mistake is dividing feed by final weight instead of weight gained. Product output is required in milk, egg-mass, and egg-count modes; use kilograms for milk or egg mass and an integer egg count for eggs per dozen. Cost of feed per unit weight is optional but, when entered, must be a nonnegative dollar amount per kilogram. Accepted dressed weight is optional, must be positive to calculate economic FCR, and should represent saleable or accepted carcass weight. Animals exited farmhouse is optional, must be a positive whole-number count, and produces feed kilograms per exiting animal.

Output guide. Feed conversion ratio is feed divided by weight gain or output. It is an estimate based on your records and has no unit when feed and product share the same weight unit; the eggs-per-dozen version is kilograms of feed per dozen eggs. Total weight gain / output is the denominator used in the calculation. Total cost of feed equals feed consumed times feed price. Feed cost per product unit connects biological efficiency to budgeting. Economic FCR uses accepted dressed weight and is usually higher than live-weight FCR when by-products are excluded. Technical FCR reports feed per animal exiting the production system. Zero output is invalid because a ratio cannot be calculated; a high FCR means more feed was used per unit of output, but comparisons are meaningful only under comparable production conditions.

Worked example. Suppose a group begins at 200 kg, ends at 1,000 kg, and consumes 1,800 kg of feed. Weight gain is 1,000 – 200 = 800 kg. The FCR is 1,800 ÷ 800 = 2.25. At $0.48 per kilogram, total feed cost is 1,800 × $0.48 = $864.00, and feed cost per kilogram of gain is $864 ÷ 800 = $1.08. If accepted dressed weight is 650 kg, economic FCR is 1,800 ÷ 650 = 2.77. These values match the default calculator state and exported workbook.

Formula and interpretation

FCR = total feed consumed ÷ total product produced

For meat production, total product produced is the increase in live weight: final weight minus initial weight. For milk or egg mass, the measured output is used directly. For eggs counted individually, feed per dozen eggs equals total feed multiplied by 12 and divided by the total number of eggs. Lower FCR generally means better feed-use efficiency, but it should not be interpreted without animal health, mortality, growth stage, feed moisture, feed waste, and environmental conditions.

Do not compare FCR values from different species, ages, moisture bases, production goals, or health conditions as though they were directly interchangeable. Consistent measurement boundaries are essential.
