How to use the Dog Size Calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator projects a puppy's approximate weight at one year of age from the puppy's current age and weight. It then maps that estimate to a broad size group and shows a typical maximum shoulder height for that group. The result is useful for early planning, but it is not a breed diagnosis, a nutrition prescription, or a guarantee of mature size. Genetics, sex, body condition, health, neuter status, and the timing of growth spurts can all make an individual puppy differ from a simple linear projection.
When to use it
Use the estimate when planning an appropriately sized crate or bed, comparing expected housing and travel needs, discussing growth with a veterinarian, or making an initial size estimate for a mixed-breed or recently adopted puppy. It is most informative when the puppy has a reliable age and has been weighed on a reasonably accurate scale. How to calculate
- Enter Puppy age as a positive number, then choose weeks, days, or months. The calculator converts the value to weeks internally.
- Enter Current weight, then choose pounds or kilograms. Changing the weight unit converts the current entry rather than merely relabeling it.

Input guide
Puppy age is required. It accepts an ordinary decimal number, with a period as the decimal separator, from more than 0 through the equivalent of 52 weeks. For example, enter 12 and select weeks. A smaller age produces a larger growth multiplier because more of the first year remains. Do not enter a birth date, a negative number, scientific notation, or a comma-decimal such as “1,5”; ambiguous formats are rejected.
Age unit is required and may be weeks, days, or months. Days are converted using 7 days per week; months use 52 weeks divided by 12. Switching units preserves the same age. For example, 12 weeks becomes about 2.77 months. Avoid changing the unit after manually typing a value intended for a different unit without first checking the converted number.
Current weight is required and must be greater than zero. A realistic example is 9 lb. A higher weight at the same age raises the adult projection proportionally. Use a recent measured weight rather than a visual guess. The calculator rejects unsupported symbols, negative values, and values so large that they would make the model unreliable.
Weight unit is required and may be lb or kg. The switch converts the current value using 1 kg = 2.2046226218 lb. For example, 9 lb becomes about 4.08 kg. Do not compare the numeric values across units without noticing the unit label.
Output guide
Estimated adult weight is the central one-year estimate in the selected weight unit. Likely range is a planning band of ±10%, not a confidence interval from a breed-specific study. Size group classifies the central estimate as Toy, Small, Medium, Large, or Giant. A boundary value is assigned to the higher group at 12, 22, 57, and 99 lb. Typical maximum height shows a broad group-level shoulder-height guide in inches and centimeters. It is not calculated from the puppy's body proportions.
Growth multiplier is 52 divided by current age in weeks. A multiplier of 4.33× means the model projects the current weight across the remaining fraction of the first year. Estimated gain remaining is adult weight minus current weight; zero means the puppy is already at the projected one-year weight. The summary pills repeat the normalized age, current weight, and size group so you can confirm the active state quickly. The table columns list the category name, pound range, kilogram range, and broad maximum-height guide.
Worked example
For a puppy aged 12 weeks and weighing 9 lb, the growth multiplier is 52 ÷ 12 = 4.3333. The central projection is 9 × 4.3333 = 39.0 lb. The planning range is 39 × 0.90 = 35.1 lb through 39 × 1.10 = 42.9 lb. A 39 lb estimate falls in the Medium group, whose broad height guide is up to 25 in / 63.5 cm. Estimated gain remaining is 39 – 9 = 30.0 lb. These exact values appear in the page and the downloaded workbook.
How the estimate works
The formula treats weight gain as if it were linear through the first 52 weeks. That makes the method transparent and easy to reproduce, but real growth curves are not perfectly straight. Interpreting the result responsibly
Treat the output as an early planning estimate. A result that changes sharply after a small age correction is a sign that precise age matters. Recalculate after future weigh-ins and compare the trend rather than relying on one reading. If growth is unexpectedly rapid, slow, or accompanied by a change in appetite, energy, stool, or body condition, consult a veterinarian.
