How to use the dog onion toxicity calculator
What this calculator does. This tool estimates two onion-dose thresholds from a dog's body weight, then compares a reported consumed amount with those thresholds. It uses a conservative “Toxic dose estimate” equal to 0.25% of body weight and a “Serious toxicity estimate” equal to 0.5% of body weight. The result is a screening estimate only. It cannot determine whether poisoning has occurred, account for a dog's individual health, identify the concentration of onion or garlic powder in a prepared food, or replace examination and laboratory testing by a veterinarian.
When to use it. It can help you organize information before calling a clinic, compare a rough kitchen estimate with weight-based thresholds, document the incident for follow-up, or understand why the same piece of onion represents a larger exposure for a small dog than for a large dog. Because allium toxicity can be delayed and concentrated powders may be more potent by weight, use the calculator alongside prompt professional advice rather than as a reason to wait.
How to calculate.
- Enter Your dog's weight as a positive decimal. Select kilograms or pounds. Changing the unit converts the current value rather than merely relabeling it.
- Enter the Consumed amount as zero or a positive decimal. Select grams or ounces. Use the most defensible estimate available, including food-label information when relevant.
- Read the Exposure assessment, the two dose estimates, and the comparison percentages. The table repeats the same canonical model values in a compact audit trail.

Input guide. Your dog's weight is required, accepts ordinary decimal notation such as 10, 10.5, or 22, and must be greater than zero. In kilograms, a realistic example is 10 kg; in pounds, the equivalent is about 22.05 lb. A larger weight raises both thresholds proportionally. Do not enter a unit symbol in the text box or use decimal-comma notation such as 10,5. Consumed amount is required and may be zero. A realistic example is 25 g, approximately 0.88 oz. A higher amount increases both the body-weight percentage and the share of the serious threshold. Do not assume that a spoonful of onion powder is equivalent to the same mass of fresh onion; dried and powdered alliums can be concentrated.
Output guide. Exposure assessment classifies the entered amount as below the conservative threshold, at or above the conservative threshold, or at or above the serious threshold. Toxic dose estimate is the dog's mass multiplied by 0.0025 and displayed in the selected amount unit. Serious toxicity estimate uses 0.005. Consumed as body weight reports consumed mass divided by body mass as a percentage. Share of serious threshold shows how close the entered amount is to the 0.5% benchmark; 100% means the entered amount equals that estimate. The summary pills repeat dog weight, consumed amount, and exposure percentage. The dose comparison table lists “Consumed amount,” “Toxic dose estimate,” and “Serious toxicity estimate,” their percentages of body weight, and a plain-language interpretation. All values are estimates, not recommendations or a declaration of safety.
Worked example. For a 10 kg dog and 25 g consumed, the conservative toxic estimate is 10 × 2.5 = 25 g, while the serious estimate is 10 × 5 = 50 g. The consumed amount is 25 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 0.25% of body weight and 25 ÷ 50 × 100 = 50% of the serious threshold. The calculator therefore displays “At or above toxic estimate,” 25.00 g, 50.00 g, 0.25%, and 50.00%.

How the estimate works
Toxic dose (g) = dog weight (kg) × 2.5
Serious toxicity dose (g) = dog weight (kg) × 5
The calculator converts all inputs to kilograms and grams before applying the formulas. The 0.5% benchmark means five grams of onion for each kilogram of body weight. The lower 0.25% value is deliberately conservative and should be interpreted as a screening point, not a scientifically precise boundary between safe and unsafe exposure. Toxicity depends on the allium species, preparation, repeated exposure, the animal's biology, and the accuracy of the reported amount.
Why prompt veterinary advice matters
Allium compounds can damage canine red blood cells and lead to hemolytic anemia. Signs may include weakness, reduced appetite, vomiting, rapid breathing or heart rate, pale or yellow gums, and dark or reddish urine. Clinical signs may not be immediate. A veterinarian can assess timing, dose uncertainty, symptoms, and whether blood testing or treatment is needed.
Common estimation mistakes
- Using the dog's weight in pounds directly in a kilograms-based formula.
- Entering ounces as grams or estimating a whole prepared dish as pure onion.
- Ignoring onion or garlic powder in seasoning blends, sauces, baby food, or supplements.
- Treating a value below the displayed threshold as proof that no treatment or monitoring is needed.
- Forgetting repeated smaller exposures over several days.
