What this calculator does
This tool converts a dog's body weight into two mathematical meloxicam quantities: a first-day loading dose at 0.20 mg/kg and a following-day dose at 0.10 mg/kg. For oral solution it then divides each dose by the selected concentration to show milliliters. For chewable tablets it divides by the tablet strength and rounds upward to the next half tablet, matching the practical convention used in the reference material. It does not diagnose pain, decide whether an NSAID is safe, replace laboratory monitoring, or authorize treatment. Meloxicam is a prescription veterinary NSAID, and the FDA's guidance on pain relievers for pets stresses veterinary supervision and benefit-risk assessment.
When to use it
Use the calculator to check the arithmetic on a veterinarian's written instruction, compare the volume produced by two labeled solution concentrations, translate a weight recorded in pounds into the kilogram-based dose formula, or prepare a clear worksheet for discussion with the clinic. Do not use it to select a medicine for an undiagnosed dog, substitute a human product, reuse another animal's prescription, or respond to a suspected overdose.

Input guide
Dog's weight is required and accepts a positive decimal number using a period as the decimal separator, such as 32 or 14.5. Do not enter units, commas, scientific notation, zero, or a negative value. A higher weight increases both doses in direct proportion. Weight unit is required and can be lb or kg; the calculator uses 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. A common mistake is entering a kilogram number while lb remains selected. Metacam form is required and controls whether the medicine amount is expressed in mL or tablets. Solution's strength is required for solution and accepts the labeled 0.5 or 1.5 mg/mL options; a stronger solution produces a smaller volume for the same dose. Tablet strength is required for tablets and offers 1 mg or 2.5 mg; the resulting count is rounded upward to a half tablet, so it may deliver more than the exact calculated milligram dose. Confirm divisibility and the prescribed product with the veterinarian.

First-day medicine amount is the primary result: mL for solution or a rounded tablet count for tablets. First-day dose is the loading dose in mg. Following-day dose is half of the loading dose in mg. Following-day medicine amount translates that maintenance dose into the selected product form. Weight in kilograms shows the canonical weight used by the formulas. Worked example
For the opening 32 lb example, the calculator converts weight to 14.51495584 kg. The first-day dose is 14.51495584 × 0.20 = 2.902991168 mg, displayed as 2.90 mg. With a 1.5 mg/mL solution, 2.902991168 ÷ 1.5 = 1.935327445 mL, displayed as 1.94 mL. The following-day dose is 14.51495584 × 0.10 = 1.451495584 mg, and the corresponding volume is 0.967663723 mL, displayed as 0.97 mL. Safety and interpretation
NSAIDs can affect the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and liver. The FDA lists vomiting, reduced appetite, reduced activity, and diarrhea among commonly reported signs, while more serious adverse effects can occur. Giving two NSAIDs together, or combining an NSAID with a corticosteroid, can increase risk. Review the product's veterinary label, disclose all medicines and health conditions to the veterinarian, and ask what monitoring is needed. Keep the result in context. A mathematically correct volume can still be clinically inappropriate when the dog is dehydrated, has kidney or liver disease, is receiving interacting medicine, is pregnant, is very young, or has had a previous NSAID reaction. Do not round a liquid dose using an unmarked kitchen spoon. Use only the measuring device supplied or recommended for the prescribed product. For tablets, the upward half-tablet rounding is a planning convention, not permission to alter a veterinarian's instruction.
Formula and common mistakes
The model uses dose = weight in kg × dose rate. For solution, volume = dose ÷ concentration. For tablets, exact count = dose ÷ tablet strength, followed by upward rounding to the next 0.5 tablet. The most consequential mistakes are mixing pounds and kilograms, selecting the wrong bottle concentration, confusing mg with mL, applying the first-day rate on later days, or entering a stale weight. Human meloxicam products should not be substituted; animal species process medicines differently, and the FDA explains why people's pain relievers may be unsafe for pets. If too much medicine may have been given, contact a veterinarian or animal poison service immediately rather than relying on a recalculation.
