This calculator turns the first observed day of a female dog's heat into a simple planning timeline. It estimates the final day of the visible heat, then adds a user-selected interval to create an earliest and latest date for the next expected cycle. The result is useful for record keeping, household management, boarding or travel planning, and preparing questions for a veterinarian. It does not identify ovulation, confirm fertility, diagnose reproductive disease, or guarantee the next cycle date. When to use it
Use the calculator after you notice the first clear sign of heat and want a dated record; when arranging separation from intact male dogs; when scheduling travel, daycare, grooming, or boarding; or when comparing several past cycles to see whether your dog's own interval is becoming consistent. Young dogs and some breeds may have irregular timing, so treat the window as a range rather than a single appointment date.

Input guide
First day of the cycle is a required calendar date. Choose the first observed day, for example July 1, 2026. Moving it later shifts every output later by the same amount. A common mistake is entering the day bleeding became heavy rather than the first credible sign. Estimated heat duration is a required whole number from 7 through 35 days; 21 is a practical example. A larger value moves only the current heat end later. Recorded cycle number is a required whole number from 1 through 100; it is stored in the record and displayed in the summary, but it does not change the date formula. It reminds you that early cycles may be less regular.
Earliest next heat is a required whole number of months from 3 through 12; the example is 5. Lowering it moves the beginning of the prediction window earlier. Latest next heat is a required whole number of months from 4 through 13; the example is 8, and it cannot be less than the earliest value. Do not interpret month addition as a fixed number of days: the calculator uses calendar months, preserving the day number where possible and using the last valid day for shorter months.
Output guide
Next heat window is the main estimate, shown as a date range driven by the start date and the two interval settings. Estimated current heat end is the start date plus the selected duration minus one day, so a 21-day heat beginning July 1 ends July 21. Window midpoint is the halfway calendar date between the earliest and latest estimates; it is a planning reference, not a claim that heat is most likely on that day. Earliest next cycle and Latest next cycle show the endpoints separately. The summary pills repeat the duration, interval, and cycle number. All outputs are estimates except the arithmetic identity created from the values you enter.
Worked example
With a first day of July 1, 2026 and a 21-day duration, the final visible day is July 21 because the starting day counts as day 1. Adding five calendar months produces December 1, 2026; adding eight months produces March 1, 2027. The midpoint between those endpoints is January 15, 2027. Therefore the first-open Next heat window is December 1, 2026 through March 1, 2027. The workbook exports those same typed dates and inputs.
Understanding the estimate
Many dogs cycle roughly twice per year, but there is no universal schedule. The VCA guide to estrus cycles in dogs notes meaningful differences by breed and individual, while the Merck Veterinary Manual's breeding-management guidance describes a broad normal interestrous interval. That variation is why the calculator uses a window instead of one predicted day.
The visible heat itself often lasts around two to three weeks, but signs and fertility do not map perfectly to a simple calendar. Keep notes on discharge, swelling, behavior, appetite, urination, and attention from male dogs. Over several cycles, your own records may justify narrowing the advanced interval. Unexpected discharge, illness, pain, fever, marked lethargy, or bleeding outside a known cycle should prompt veterinary advice rather than calendar adjustment.
Practical cautions
Do not use the midpoint as a breeding date or a “safe” date. Sperm can remain viable, ovulation timing varies, and visible signs are imperfect. For purposeful breeding, a veterinarian may use examination, vaginal cytology, or hormone testing. For pregnancy prevention, physical separation from intact males throughout the entire heat is more reliable than trying to identify a narrow fertile period.
