How to use this dog food calculator
What this calculator does
This calculator estimates a dog's daily energy requirement, then translates the portion assigned to the main food into cups per day and cups per meal. It starts with resting energy requirement (RER), applies a life-stage or activity multiplier to estimate maintenance energy requirement (MER), and subtracts a chosen treat allowance. It is a planning estimate, not a diagnosis or a prescription for a dog with disease, pregnancy, unusual working demands, or a medically supervised weight-change program.
When to use it
Use it when comparing foods with different calorie densities, dividing a daily ration into meals, estimating a starting portion after a food change, or checking whether treats are crowding out complete-and-balanced food. It is also useful when a veterinary professional gives you a daily calorie target and you want to understand the portion implied by the label's kcal-per-cup value.
How to calculate
- Enter the dog's ideal body weight and choose kilograms or pounds. Changing the unit converts the current value rather than merely relabeling it.
- Select the closest “Life stage and activity” option. This sets the multiplier applied to RER.
- Enter the food's “Food energy density” in kcal/cup from the package's calorie-content statement.
- Choose “Meals per day,” then enter a “Treat allowance” from 0% to 20%.
- Read “Food to serve each day,” “Daily energy need,” and “Food per meal.” Review the breakdown table, then use “Download Excel” to save the current inputs and results. “Reset” restores the documented defaults.
Input guide
Dog's ideal body weight is required and accepts a positive decimal in kg or lb, such as 20 kg. A larger weight raises RER nonlinearly; entering an overweight current weight can overstate a weight-loss ration. Life stage and activity is required and selects a multiplier, for example 1.6 for a typical neutered adult. Higher multipliers increase daily calories; a working-dog factor should not be used merely because a pet enjoys walks. Food energy density is required in kcal/cup, such as 400. Higher calorie density means fewer cups for the same energy target. Do not enter kcal/kg unless you first convert it to kcal/cup using the product's measured cup weight. Meals per day is required and divides the daily cups into one to four equal planned meals; it does not change daily calories. Treat allowance is required, accepts 0 – 20%, and reserves that share of MER for treats. A higher percentage lowers the calculated cups of complete food.
Output guide
Food to serve each day is the estimated cups of the entered food after the treat allowance. Daily energy need is MER in kcal/day. Resting energy (RER) is the metabolic baseline before the selected multiplier. Food calories and Treat calories split the daily target according to the treat percentage. Food per meal divides the daily cups by the selected meal count. Weight used confirms the converted kilogram value used by the formula. The table repeats the food and treat calorie split; zero treat allowance correctly produces zero treat calories, while a higher allowance reduces food cups without changing total MER.
Worked example
For a 20 kg neutered adult eating food with 400 kcal/cup, two meals per day, and a 10% treat allowance, RER is 70 × 200.75 = 662.0 kcal/day. Applying the 1.6 multiplier gives 1,059.3 kcal/day. Ten percent, or 105.9 kcal, is reserved for treats, leaving 953.3 kcal for the main food. Dividing by 400 kcal/cup gives 2.38 cups/day, or 1.19 cups/meal. Those are the exact default-state results shown by the calculator and exported workbook.

How the estimate works

Food cups/day = MER × (1 – treat percentage) ÷ kcal per cup
RER estimates the energy needed for basic physiological functions at rest. MER is an individualized starting point obtained by multiplying RER by a factor for life stage, neuter status, activity, or a defined weight-management purpose. The factors are broad ranges rather than guarantees. Two dogs of the same weight can differ because of breed, lean body mass, environment, health, and spontaneous activity.
Use the package's calorie-content statement rather than relying only on a generic feeding chart. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's guidance on understanding pet-food labels explains the information commonly printed on commercial products. Recheck weight and body condition every two to four weeks after a meaningful portion change, and make gradual adjustments with a veterinarian when the dog is underweight, overweight, growing, pregnant, nursing, or medically complex.
