It cannot confirm what the dog actually absorbed, predict an individual outcome, account for every recipe, or replace examination and treatment.

When to use it

Use it after discovering missing chocolate, while gathering information for an emergency call, when comparing the relative hazard of milk versus darker chocolate, or when documenting a known exposure for the veterinary team. How to calculate

Input guide

Your dog's weight is required, accepts a plain decimal from 0.1 to 150 kg, and directly divides the total exposure. A realistic entry is 12 kg. A heavier dog receives a lower mg/kg dose from the same chocolate amount; a lighter dog receives a higher dose. Do not enter pounds without converting them to kilograms, and do not use an old weight for a growing puppy.

Chocolate type is required and uses a fixed list from white chocolate through cocoa powder. Choose the closest product based on cocoa content. For example, select 60% cocoa chocolate for a bar labeled 60% cacao. Selecting a darker type raises the estimated concentration. A common mistake is choosing milk chocolate for a dark baking product or assuming every brand has identical chemistry.

Amount eaten is required, accepts a plain decimal greater than zero and up to 10,000 g, and represents estimated product mass. A realistic example is 30 g. Increasing this value raises total received and dose in direct proportion. Do not enter ounces, package count, or the weight of wrappers; convert the edible amount to grams first.

Output guide

Methylxanthines dose is the primary estimate in mg/kg. It is driven by all three inputs and equals combined methylxanthines received divided by dog weight. A zero value is possible only when exposure is effectively zero; higher values indicate greater concern. Prognosis is a broad interpretation band, not a diagnosis. Total methylxanthines received is the total milligrams in the estimated portion and does not adjust for body size. Theobromine dose and Caffeine dose show each component per kilogram. The Dose breakdown table lists the assumed concentration, total received, and body-weight dose for each component and the combined total.

Worked example

For the startup example, milk chocolate is modeled at 2.30 mg/g theobromine plus 0.20 mg/g caffeine, or 2.50 mg/g combined. Thirty grams therefore contains 75.00 mg of methylxanthines. Dividing 75.00 mg by a 12 kg body weight gives 6.25 mg/kg. The displayed component doses are 5.75 mg/kg theobromine and 0.50 mg/kg caffeine, which sum exactly to the primary 6.25 mg/kg result.

How the estimate works

For each substance, the calculator multiplies the selected concentration in milligrams per gram by the amount eaten in grams. That produces total milligrams received. It then divides by body weight in kilograms to obtain mg/kg. Theobromine and caffeine doses are added to form the combined methylxanthine dose.

The risk bands are intentionally broad: below 15.01 mg/kg is shown as below the usual symptom threshold; 15.01 – 34.02 mg/kg indicates gastrointestinal signs may occur; 34.02 – 45 mg/kg indicates cardiac effects may occur; 45 – 55.01 mg/kg indicates tremors or seizures may occur; and values above 55.01 mg/kg are marked as potentially life-threatening. Individual response varies, and treatment decisions belong to a veterinarian.

Important limitations and next steps

Chocolate composition varies with cocoa percentage, processing, recipe, and brand. The amount eaten is often uncertain, and dogs may consume fillings, raisins, macadamia nuts, xylitol, wrappers, or other ingredients that create separate hazards. Symptoms can also be delayed. For those reasons, a low estimate should not be used as permission to wait when the exposure is uncertain or the dog is unwell.

Record the product name, cocoa percentage, package size, missing quantity, time of exposure, dog weight, symptoms, and any other ingredients. Keep the packaging available. Contact a veterinarian promptly and follow professional instructions rather than inducing vomiting or giving home remedies without guidance.
