How to use this dog calorie calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator estimates a healthy adult dog's daily maintenance energy requirement and converts that energy target into grams of a chosen food. It first estimates resting energy requirement from body weight, then applies an activity coefficient. The result is a planning starting point for feeding an adult dog at an ideal body condition. It does not diagnose obesity, set a therapeutic weight-loss diet, or replace a veterinarian's plan for puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, dogs with chronic disease, or dogs whose weight is changing unexpectedly.

When to use it

Use it when checking whether a package feeding guide is in the right range, comparing portions for foods with different energy densities, planning how much food to buy for a trip or month, or discussing a starting calorie target with a veterinary professional. How to calculate

  1. Choose Activity based on the dog's usual daily routine. Senior or mostly sedentary dogs generally fit the low category; ordinary leash walks usually fit moderate, low intensity.
  2. Enter Weight and choose kg or lb. Changing the unit converts the current value rather than merely changing its label.
  3. Enter Energy content in food in kcal per 100 g. If the package lists kcal/kg, divide by 10; for example, 3,500 kcal/kg equals 350 kcal/100 g.
  4. Open Food planning options to set Number of days and Meals per day. Read the daily, per-meal, and period totals as they update.
  5. Use Download Excel to save the current inputs, results, and comparison table. Use Reset to restore the original activity, food density, days, meals, and blank weight.

Input guide

Activity is required and accepts one of four defined categories. It controls the coefficient applied to metabolic body weight. A realistic example is “Moderate, low intensity: 1 – 3 hours/day.” Choosing a higher category raises the calorie estimate; the common mistake is selecting a category from one exceptional day instead of the dog's normal routine.

Weight is required, accepts a decimal greater than 0 and no more than 200 kg (440.9 lb), and can be entered in kilograms or pounds. An example is 10 kg. Higher weight increases energy need, but not in direct proportion because the model uses weight to the 0.75 power. Do not use an overweight dog's current weight as an unsupervised weight-loss target.

Energy content in food is required and accepts 1 – 1,000 kcal per 100 g; 350 kcal/100 g is a common dry-food example. A higher energy density reduces the gram portion needed for the same calories. Do not enter kcal/kg without converting it, and do not confuse kcal with kilojoules.

Number of days is required for period planning and accepts a whole number from 1 to 365; 30 is the default. It changes only the period food total. Meals per day accepts a whole number from 1 to 6; 2 is the default. It divides the daily gram amount into equal meal portions and does not change daily calories.

Output guide

Your dog needs is the estimated maintenance energy in kcal/day. Resting energy requirement is the baseline 70 × weight0.75 estimate before activity. Daily food amount converts the selected calorie target into grams using the food's energy density. Food per meal divides the daily grams by meals per day. Food for selected period multiplies daily grams by the chosen number of days and displays kilograms. Zero is not a meaningful healthy-adult result here, so missing or invalid inputs are rejected instead of converted to zero.

The summary pills repeat the current weight, activity, and daily food amount. The Activity-level comparison table shows all four activity coefficients, their estimated kcal/day, and the corresponding food grams/day for the same weight and food. These are scenario comparisons, not four recommendations to average together.

Worked example

For a 10 kg dog with moderate low-intensity activity, the resting estimate is 70 × 100.75 = 393.64 kcal/day. Applying the 110 coefficient form gives 110 × 100.75 = 618.55 kcal/day, displayed as 619 kcal/day. With food containing 350 kcal/100 g, the daily portion is 618.55 ÷ 350 × 100 = 176.73 g/day, displayed as 177 g/day. At two meals, that is 88.36 g per meal, displayed as 88 g. Over 30 days, the plan totals 5.30 kg.

How the estimate works

Daily energy (kcal/day) = activity coefficient × body weight in kg0.75. Resting energy requirement = 70 × body weight in kg0.75.

The coefficients in this tool are 95 for low activity, 110 for moderate low-intensity activity, 125 for moderate high-intensity activity, and 130 for high working activity. The resulting values align with common maintenance-energy guidance for healthy adult dogs, including the WSAVA calorie ranges for healthy adult dogs. Dogs vary, so actual intake should be adjusted over time to maintain an ideal body condition.

Interpreting food energy labels

Commercial pet foods may list energy as kcal/kg, kcal/cup, kcal/can, or kcal per serving. This calculator needs kcal per 100 g so that the result remains a mass portion. A product listed at 3,800 kcal/kg is 380 kcal/100 g. Cup-based values cannot be converted accurately without the product's grams-per-cup measurement. Important limitations

This calculator is for general education. Seek veterinary guidance for puppies, pregnancy or lactation, working or endurance dogs with unusually heavy workloads, diabetes, kidney or liver disease, gastrointestinal disease, significant underweight or overweight, or any prescribed therapeutic diet.

Monitor body weight and body condition rather than treating a calculated calorie number as permanently exact. Treats, chews, table food, supplements, and flavored medications contribute energy and should be counted. If body weight trends up or down unexpectedly, do not simply make large portion changes; discuss the pattern with a veterinarian and rule out medical causes.
