Interpreting a canine BMI estimate responsibly

Dogs are not scaled versions of one another. A sighthound, bulldog, retriever, and toy breed can have very different chest depth, limb length, muscle mass, and fat distribution at healthy condition. That is why this calculator does not assign universal underweight, ideal, overweight, or obese labels from the number alone. Instead, use the value as a repeatable ratio. A rising ratio with unchanged height means weight has increased; a falling ratio means weight has decreased.
