What this calculator does
This tool estimates two herd-management dates from one breeding event: the expected Calving start and the expected End of postpartum. It adds a standard 283-day cattle gestation interval to the entered exposure or insemination date, then adds either 55 or 65 days for the postpartum interval. The result is a practical planning estimate, not a veterinary diagnosis and not a guarantee of the exact day a calf will be born. Individual gestation length varies, and an exposure date may not be the true conception date when a bull remains with the herd for several days.
When to use it
Use the calculator when scheduling calving checks, preparing a maternity pen, planning late-gestation nutrition, estimating when a cow may return to breeding readiness, or building a simple herd calendar after artificial insemination. It is also useful for comparing first-calf heifers with mature cows because the postpartum assumption changes automatically.
How to calculate
- Enter the Exposed or inseminated date as a calendar date. For artificial insemination, use the exact procedure date. For natural service, use the best-supported likely breeding date.
- Select First-time calver? when the animal is carrying her first calf. Leave it clear for a cow that has calved before.
- Read Calving start as the estimated date 283 days after exposure. Then review End of postpartum, Postpartum interval, Gestation used, and Total planning horizon.
- Check the Planning timeline table for each milestone, its date, elapsed days, and interpretation.

Total planning horizon equals gestation plus postpartum time, so it is 338 days for a mature cow and 348 days for a first-time calver. Worked example
Suppose a mature cow was inseminated on January 1, 2026 and First-time calver? is not selected. The calculation is January 1 plus 283 days, giving a displayed Calving start of October 11, 2026. The mature-cow postpartum interval is 55 days, so October 11 plus 55 days gives an End of postpartum of December 5, 2026. The Total planning horizon is 283 + 55 = 338 days.
