This calculator estimates how much compost is needed to cover a rectangular garden, raised bed, new lawn, or established lawn at a chosen depth. It converts the result into convenient purchasing units, rounds retail bags up to a whole-bag count, estimates the weight from a density assumption, and calculates an optional purchase cost. It is a planning estimate rather than a soil test or crop-specific fertilizer recommendation. The correct application rate can depend on existing soil organic matter, drainage, crop needs, compost maturity, and local guidance.

When to use it

Use it before top-dressing an established lawn, incorporating compost into a new garden, filling the compost portion of a raised-bed mix, or comparing bagged compost costs with a bulk delivery quote. The application ranges reflect the common guidance that gardens, raised beds, and new lawns often receive roughly 1 – 2 inches, while established lawns receive about 1/4 – 1/2 inch. How to calculate

  1. The calculator opens with a ready-to-use 10 ft by 5 ft demonstration garden, a 2 in heavy application, one-cubic-foot bags, a $5.00 bag price, and a 40 lb/ft³ density. The example Excel workbook is immediately available.
  2. Select the Measurement system. Switching systems converts all current dimensions, depth, bag volume, and density rather than changing labels only.
  3. Replace Length and Width with the rectangular project dimensions. Choose a Garden or lawn type preset or choose Custom depth and edit Depth.
  4. Enter the seller's Bag size, optional Price per bag, and a reasonable Estimated density if you want bag, cost, and weight estimates.
  5. Read the live volume, bag count, weight, cost, and rounding margin. Select Download Excel to save the current model. Reset clears the demonstration data and disables export until a complete valid state is entered again.

Input guide

Measurement system is required and accepts Imperial or Metric. Imperial uses feet, inches, cubic feet, and pounds; Metric uses meters, centimeters, liters, and kilograms. A common mistake is switching systems and then manually re-entering the old number without converting it.

Length and Width are required positive decimals. Enter 10 and 5 for a 10-by-5-foot bed, or 3.05 and 1.52 for approximately the same metric area. Increasing either value increases area and every volume-dependent result proportionally. Commas, scientific notation, units typed into the field, zero, and negative values are rejected.

Garden or lawn type is required. Presets insert 1 or 2 inches for gardens, raised beds, and new lawns, and 0.25 or 0.5 inch for established lawns. Depth is a required positive decimal and remains editable. A realistic custom value is 1.5 in. Doubling depth doubles compost volume. Avoid confusing application depth with the total depth of the existing soil profile.

Bag size is required and must be positive. Typical retail values are 1 ft³, 1.5 ft³, 40 L, or 50 L. Larger bags reduce the whole-bag count for the same project. Use the volume printed on the package, not its weight.

Price per bag is optional but, when supplied, must be zero or greater and is entered in U.S. dollars with a decimal point, such as 5 or 7.49. It affects only Estimated cost. Estimated density is required for weight and must be positive; 40 lb/ft³ is the demonstration value. Wet compost can be substantially heavier, so treat weight as a handling estimate rather than a guaranteed shipping weight.

Output guide

Compost volume is the unrounded physical volume required. Area is length multiplied by width. Cubic yards is the same volume in a bulk-supplier unit. Bags to buy divides required volume by bag size and rounds upward to a whole count. Estimated weight multiplies volume by density. Estimated cost multiplies whole bags by price, while Purchased volume is the total bag volume actually bought. The quantity breakdown also reports Extra after rounding and Coverage margin. A zero margin means the bag size divides the need exactly; a higher margin means more leftover compost, not a calculation error. The project table exposes each identity and conversion used.

Worked example

The opening example has an area of 10 ft × 5 ft = 50 ft². A 2 in layer equals 2/12 ft, so the required volume is 50 × 2/12 = 8.3333 ft³, displayed as 8.33 ft³. Dividing by a 1 ft³ bag gives 8.3333 bags, so the calculator rounds up to 9 bags. Those bags provide 9.00 ft³, leaving 0.67 ft³ extra, an 8.00% margin. At $5.00 per bag the purchase estimate is $45.00. At 40 lb/ft³ the required compost weighs about 333 lb. For safe handling, remember that moisture changes density and divide the load into manageable trips.

How the model works

Area = length × width. Compost volume = area × depth after converting depth into the same linear unit. Bags = ceiling(volume ÷ bag size). Cost = bags × price per bag. Weight = volume × density.

The volume identity is exact for a rectangular area with a uniform layer. The planning uncertainty comes from real-world measurement, settling, slope, surface irregularity, moisture, and product density. For bulk purchasing, divide cubic feet by 27 to obtain cubic yards. In metric mode, the calculator uses cubic meters internally and reports liters because retail compost is commonly labeled that way.

Choosing an application depth

For a new garden, raised bed, or new lawn, 1 – 2 inches is a practical planning range when compost will be incorporated into the upper soil. Established turf is usually top-dressed much more lightly, often 1/4 – 1/2 inch. More is not always better: immature or salty compost, excessive nutrient loading, or a layer left unmixed can create problems. Check product analysis and local recommendations for sensitive crops or unusual soils.

Buying and handling compost

Retail bags are easy to transport and let you buy a precise quantity, but whole-bag rounding creates leftover material. Bulk compost usually reduces packaging and may cost less per unit, but delivery minimums and access matter. Compare like-for-like volume units, and ask whether the quoted material is screened, mature, and suitable for the intended use.
