How to use the cat pregnancy calculator

What this calculator does

This calculator converts one known or estimated Mating date into three planning dates: an Estimated due date at 63 days, an Earliest typical date at 58 days, and a Latest typical date at 71 days. It also builds a dated pregnancy timeline. The result helps organize veterinary appointments, feeding discussions, nesting preparation, and observation around the expected delivery period. It does not prove that a cat is pregnant, identify litter size, assess fetal health, or replace examination by a veterinarian. Veterinary references describe feline gestation as variable; the Merck Veterinary Manual gestation-period table gives a broad breeding-based range, while clinical sources commonly place the average near nine weeks.

When to use it

Use the calculator after a planned breeding when the mating date was recorded; when fostering or caring for a possibly pregnant queen and a likely breeding date is known; when scheduling a pregnancy-confirmation visit; or when preparing a quiet birthing area and supplies. If several mating dates are possible, run each date separately. The true window may be wider because ovulation does not necessarily occur at the first mating.

How to calculate

1. Select the best-known Mating date in the date field. The calculator updates immediately; no Calculate button is needed.
2. Read Estimated due date as the central planning date, calculated exactly 63 calendar days after mating.
3. Use Earliest typical date and Latest typical date as a practical observation window rather than as guaranteed limits.
4. Review the Pregnancy timeline for dated checkpoints such as the average midpoint, preparation period, and expected delivery window.
5. Select Download Excel to export the current mating date, all calculated dates, assumptions, and timeline rows into a validated workbook. Select Reset to clear the date and restore the original blank state.

Input guide

Mating date is the only required control. It accepts a real calendar date through the browser's date picker in year-month-day form internally. A realistic example is July 1, 2026. Earlier or later mating dates move every output by the same number of calendar days. Do not enter the date when pregnancy was first noticed unless that was also the breeding date. Avoid estimating from abdominal size alone; pregnancy, weight gain, and illness can look similar, so a veterinary assessment is safer.

Output guide

Estimated due date is an estimate, displayed as a weekday plus month, day, and year, and is driven only by the mating date. Earliest typical date and Latest typical date define the calculator's 58 – 71 day planning interval. The header pills repeat the fixed assumptions – Average: 63 days and Typical window: days 58 – 71 – and show whether a valid date has been entered. The Pregnancy timeline table lists each milestone, its gestation day, its estimated date, and a practical planning note. A date near either boundary is not automatically abnormal, but a cat showing distress or failing to progress in labor needs veterinary advice.

Worked example

Suppose the recorded mating date is July 1, 2026. Adding 63 calendar days gives an Estimated due date of Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Adding 58 days gives an Earliest typical date of Friday, August 28, 2026, and adding 71 days gives a Latest typical date of Thursday, September 10, 2026. The timeline places day 21 on July 22, day 42 on August 12, and the preparation checkpoint at day 56 on August 26. These are exactly the values shown in the calculator and exported workbook for that input.
