What this calculator does

This calculator estimates the total methylxanthines a cat may have swallowed and expresses the exposure as milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Methylxanthines are mainly theobromine and caffeine. The estimate helps organize the facts a veterinarian may ask for: the cat's weight, the chocolate product, the amount missing, the estimated toxin concentration, and the resulting body-weight dose. It does not determine whether home monitoring is safe, replace an examination, account for every ingredient in a candy or baked product, or predict an individual cat's exact response.

When to use it

Use the calculator while preparing to call a veterinary clinic, when comparing the potential exposure from milk versus darker chocolate, when checking how a small cat's dose changes for the same amount eaten, or when documenting an incident for follow-up. Do not delay professional help while trying to perfect the numbers. How to calculate

  2. Replace Your cat's weight with the most recent reliable weight, then choose kg or lb. Changing the unit converts the current value rather than changing only the label.
  3. Select the closest Chocolate type. Use the packaging when available. Products with cocoa powder, baking chocolate, or high cocoa content can be much more concentrated than milk chocolate.

Input guide

Your cat's weight is required and accepts a positive decimal number in kilograms or pounds, such as 4 kg or 8.8 lb. A higher weight lowers the calculated mg/kg dose for the same exposure; a lower weight raises it. Do not enter zero, a negative number, a range such as “4-5,” or scientific notation. Chocolate type is required and must be selected from White chocolate, Milk chocolate, Semisweet or sweet dark, Unsweetened baking chocolate, or Cocoa powder. The option supplies an estimated methylxanthine concentration; choosing a darker or more concentrated product generally raises the dose. A mixed candy, brownie, frosting, protein bar, or unknown cocoa percentage may not match any option well. Amount eaten is required and accepts a positive decimal in grams or ounces, such as 32 g or 1.13 oz. More chocolate increases both total methylxanthines and dose in direct proportion. Do not enter package weight when only part was eaten, and do not silently treat a decimal comma as a decimal point.

Output guide

Methylxanthines dose is the primary result in mg/kg. It is driven by all three inputs and is an estimate, not a diagnosis. A zero dose would require zero exposure, which this calculator does not accept as a completed incident. A higher dose indicates greater potential concern. Total methylxanthines received is the estimated total milligrams swallowed and depends on chocolate type and amount, not body weight. Chocolate concentration is the standard mg/g value assigned to the selected product. Risk band places the calculated dose into a screening category, while the matching summary pill and prognosis text restate that category. The exposure table shows Cat weight, Chocolate eaten, Concentration, Total methylxanthines, and Dose so each calculation step can be checked. Individual sensitivity, other ingredients, existing disease, and uncertainty in the amount eaten can make the real clinical risk higher or lower.

Worked example

For the startup example, milk chocolate is assigned 2.30 mg/g. Multiplying 32.00 g by 2.30 mg/g gives 73.60 mg of total methylxanthines. Dividing 73.60 mg by a 4.00 kg body weight gives 18.40 mg/kg. The first-open result therefore shows 18.40 mg/kg, 73.60 mg total, a concentration of 2.30 mg/g, and the “GI signs possible” risk band. How the estimate works

The model uses a simple exposure equation: concentration in milligrams per gram multiplied by grams eaten gives total milligrams, and total milligrams divided by body weight in kilograms gives milligrams per kilogram. The concentration values follow the standard table in the Merck Veterinary Manual methylxanthine content table. The screening bands mirror commonly cited veterinary toxicology ranges, but cats can vary and product concentrations are not exact.

Important limitations and next steps

Chocolate products may contain coffee, raisins, alcohol, macadamia nuts, medications, or other ingredients that change the emergency.
