How to use the Cat BMI Calculator
What this calculator does. This tool estimates a cat's feline body mass index, commonly interpreted as an approximate body-fat percentage, from rib cage circumference and lower hind-leg length. It is useful as a quick morphometric screening method because the leg measurement acts as a proxy for frame size while the chest measurement reflects body size around the trunk. It does not diagnose obesity, determine an ideal feeding plan, or replace a veterinary body condition and muscle condition assessment.
When to use it. Use it to establish a repeatable home baseline, to track changes during a veterinarian-guided weight-management plan, to compare two measurements taken several weeks apart, or to prepare more objective observations for a wellness appointment. It is especially useful when body weight alone is hard to interpret because cats of different frame sizes can weigh the same.
How to calculate:
- Stand your cat on a level surface with the head upright and all four legs naturally positioned.
- Measure Rib cage circumference at the ninth rib with a flexible tape. Keep the tape snug but do not compress the coat or chest.
- Measure Length of the lower back leg from the middle of the kneecap to the tip of the hock.
- Select inches or centimeters for each measurement. Changing a unit converts the current value, so the physical measurement stays the same.

Input guide. Rib cage circumference is required and accepts a positive decimal number in inches or centimeters; 14 inches is a realistic example. A larger chest measurement increases FBMI when leg length is unchanged. Common mistakes include measuring too far behind the rib cage, pulling the tape too tightly, or entering a comma as a decimal separator. Length of the lower back leg is also required and accepts a positive decimal number; 2 inches is the worked-example value. A longer leg generally lowers the estimate for the same chest size. Measure the bony landmarks rather than the entire rear leg, and do not mix an inch value with a centimeter label.
Output guide. Feline Body Mass Index (FBMI) is displayed to one decimal place. Values below 15 screen as underweight, 15 to 29.9 as normal weight, 30 to 42 as overweight, and above 42 as obese. The Rib cage in centimeters and Leg length in centimeters cards show the canonical measurements used in the equation, which makes unit conversion transparent. The summary pills repeat the current FBMI, range, and active rib-cage unit. A boundary value should be interpreted carefully because small tape-placement differences can move the result between adjacent ranges.
Worked example. With a rib cage circumference of 14 inches and a lower back leg length of 2 inches, the calculator converts the measurements to 35.56 cm and 5.08 cm. It then evaluates ((35.56 ÷ 0.70622) – 5.08) ÷ 0.9156 – 5.08, producing an FBMI of 44.4. The result falls above 42, so the screening interpretation is obese. Repeating the measurement before drawing conclusions helps reduce tape-placement error.

Measurement quality matters
Take each measurement two or three times and use the average when the readings differ. Long fur, an uncooperative stance, breathing movement, and inconsistent landmark placement can all affect the result. The method was developed as a simple estimate and is most useful when measurements are taken consistently over time. A sudden change in body shape, appetite, activity, or weight deserves professional evaluation even when FBMI remains in the same range.
